The Township of Georgian Bay is a growing water-based community located in the District of Muskoka along the eastern shore of beautiful Georgian Bay. We have a multitude of inland lakes, are a gateway to the world-famous 30,000 Islands and the access point to Georgian Bay Islands National Park. Steeped in history, our cultural roots are an important part of our community.
The Township has a permanent resident population of approximately 3,500 and an additional seasonal population of around 17,500. The municipal office is located in Port Severn which is a short commute from Barrie, Midland, Orillia, Parry Sound, and surrounding areas.
**Overview**:We are looking for an Equipment Operator/Recreation Labourer to join our team. This is a hybrid position which works in both the Roads and Parks/Facilities Divisions within the Operations Department. During the winter season, this position will perform a variety of duties related to winter roads maintenance and may assist with ice rink maintenance, as required. For the remainder of the year, this role will maintain and operate public parks, waterfronts, trails, sports fields, and the splash pad, as well as indoor multi-functional recreation facilities.
**Duties include but are not limited to**:
- Remove snow from District and Township roads, sidewalks, and parking lots. Perform salting and sanding, and road patrols.
- Maintain logbooks, time books, and traffic protection plans. Perform vehicle circle checks.
- Ensure that facilities are clean, presentable, and safe for public use, including transporting equipment/furniture, removal of garbage/debris, and monitoring the HVAC system.
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs to facilities and park infrastructure.
- Install and maintain parks horticulture. Ensure that grounds and properties owned by the Township are presentable, safe, and properly maintained. This involves the use of various pieces of equipment (mowers, trimmers, tillers, tractors, etc.).
- Perform regular playground inspections and maintain the splash pad.
- Review rental contracts with facility user groups and communicate applicable policies such as alcohol and key-holder policies. Handle billing and payments for functions.
- Assist with the maintenance of a full-service artificial ice rink including the operation of the ice re-surfacer, edger, and propane exchanges. Perform all ice maintenance including painting and making ice and conducting board and glass inspections and repairs.
- Monitor the refrigeration plant and perform minor maintenance in accordance with Emergency Ammonia Plant Operations guidelines.
- Insert, repair, and remove docks in Township owned water access areas.
**Knowledge/experience**:
- Secondary School Diploma.
- Valid Ontario Class DZ Drivers Licence, in good standing.
- Two (2) years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in a municipal environment.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to use small tools, lawn tractors, and other small equipment.
- Certified Ice Technician designation would be an asset as would experience operating an ice plant.
- Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and administrative skills.
- Good computer skills including experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
**Working conditions**: This position requires travel throughout the Township and may be based out of the Port Severn or MacTier yard.
**Wage rate**:$27.34 to 29.86 per hour (2023 rate of pay), based on a 40-hour workweek.
