Accessibility Services at UWinnipeg facilitates and promotes the on-going development of an accessible learning environment which provides students with disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of campus life.

Reporting to the Coordinator, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, **American Sign Language (ASL) - English Interpreters** work primarily in classroom settings to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students with an accessible learning environment.

**Responsibilities**:

- Facilitate communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing and hearing individuals during lectures, labs, discussion groups, tutorial sessions, and other events.
- Provide interpretation at public events, making those events accessible.
- Interpreting Features include:

- Convey accurate meaning.
- Use context to convey complete message (explicit/implicit, register, affect, speaker style).
- Identify/convey main points with appropriate supporting details.
- Appropriately mediate culturally linked elements.
- Recognize/correct errors appropriately.
- Match clients speaking/signing style.
- Use ASL/English discourse strategies.
- Incorporate features of ASL which include; proper grammar and syntax, non-manual markers, fingerspelling is clear and appropriate, classifiers are accurate and appropriate, role-shift is used appropriately, time indicators, and topicalization.
- Incorporate features of English which include; clear articulation, appropriate intonation, spoken fluency (no filler, false starts, pausing/phrasing), and the use of tense, pronouns, verbs, nouns and complete sentences.
- Provide explanation of Interpreter’s role and negotiate positioning with professors and students to obtain the most appropriate environment in the classroom
- Assess and evaluate success of interpretation through peer diagnostic analysis to ensure message equivalency.
- Edit written assignments to bridge the language barrier between ASL and English as per students’ request.
- Reconcile and resolve any issues that arise regarding interpretation and/or refer them to supervisor.
- Discusses evaluation outcomes with supervisor.
- Provide orientation for ASL-English Interpreter practicum students.
- Observe, evaluate, and provide constructive feedback to practicum students.
- Answer questions and provide guidance with the interpreter training students.
- Secure the preparation material required by corresponding with faculty, staff, Deaf community members etc. to ensure message equivalency.
- Ensures access to the on-line Learning Materials System, NEXUS and others.
- Prepare for interpreting by spending time with students and team interpreters to discuss sign choices for course vocabulary, meeting with faculty, staff and members of the Deaf community.

**Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of an ASL-English Interpreter education program.
- Undergraduate degree as asset.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Canada Written Test of Knowledge (WTK).
- Active member in good standing with Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Canada/Manitoba Association of Visual Language Interpreters.
- Experience in ASL-English Interpreting required.
- Experience in ASL-English Interpreting in a post-secondary environment is preferred.
- Required to function independently.
- Required to function as a member of the team.
- Adheres to the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Profession Conduct as outlined by CASLI.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, while striving to obtain the CASLI Certification of Interpretation (COI).
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills.
- Possesses well-developed Interpreting skills.
- Communicate fluently and accurately in English and ASL using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, pragmatics and discourse.
- Collaborate and work co-operatively with interpreting team members towards a successful interpretation.
- Act in a professional and culturally appropriate manner in all situations.

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

**The salary range for this position will be from $27.30 to $37.85 hourly.**
