Reporting to the Superintendent, Parks East, the Horticulture East Supervisor is responsible for the delivery of high quality and cost effective professional parks and horticulture services. Primary responsibility will be the supervision of in-house staff engaged in the delivery of all aspects of parks & horticulture services. Through effective leadership and management skills, the supervisor ensures subordinate staff and contractors work within a healthy and safe work place and in an effective and efficient manner in accordance with industry standards and best practices.

The Supervisor will provide operations and maintenance for the greenhouse complexes, planting and maintenance of annuals, perennials and shrubs within the West Region. The Supervisor will direct permanent and seasonal CUPE staff.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Responsible for the overall day to day operations of the greenhouse operations including monitoring work activities and directing staff to ensure service standards are being met or exceeded.
- Responsible for recruiting, hiring, development, training, coaching, performance management and discipline of assigned staff.
- Ensure all services delivered are in compliance with occupational health and safety, WHMIS and hazardous substance programs. Mitigate any associated risks.
- Occasional participation in various Labour Relations initiatives and committees i.e. OH&S/Labour Management, etc.
- In consultation with the Superintendent, assist with the development, preparation and oversight of the operating and capital budgets, and staffing requirements.
- Monitor and coordinate goods, materials and equipment usage.
- Documentation, reporting and oversee record keeping and work schedules as required including the development and implementation of tenders (seed, bulb, shrub orders etc.).
- Provide recommendations and advice to external and internal clients and serve as a technical resource for horticulture.
- Participate in Special Events planning and logístical support as required.
- May be required to work overtime and play a role in the Parks Winter Works Program.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education & Experience**:

- Two (2) year diploma in parks management, horticulture, landscape maintenance or related discipline, undergraduate degree or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or leadership position within a formal park or horticulture/botanical garden operation.
- Must have experience working in or managing a production greenhouse operation.
- Training and experience in human resource management, budget management, and major project management.
- Current and valid Driver’s License (minimum Class 5 or equivalent for another province and willing and able to obtain NS Driver’s License), and a safe and responsible driving record.

**Graduation from HRM’s Aspiring Leader’s Program is considered an asset, and completion of the program is equivalent to one year of leadership experience.**

**Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**:

- Must have experience in municipal horticultural practices, specifically 5 years in landscape maintenance.
- Must have a current and valid Driver’s License (Minimum Class 5 or equivalent for another province and willing and able to obtain NS Driver’s License), and a safe and responsible driving record.
- Keeps current in technology and regulatory requirements of the profession.
- Practical experience and knowledge in plant cultivation and identification.
- Experience in fleet equipment management.
- Demonstrated labour relations skills in managing a unionized workforce.
- Knowledge of HRM relevant software i.e. Hansen, SAP, Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge and skills related to budget preparation and management.
- Strong working knowledge of NS Temporary Workplace Traffic Control manual and WHMIS is required.

**WORK STATUS**:Permanent, full-time

**HOURS OF WORK**: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm or other hours as required.

**SALARY**: Non-Union Level NU05 $66,170 - $85,630. Salary will be commensurate with education and years of applicable experience.
