In collaboration with the Child & Youth Engagement Manager Cloverdale/Newton, GBK Kids Team and community partners, the Child & Youth Recreation Leader will work to develop and implement the UWBC School’s Out Program at 2 local Surrey schools & other youth programs as directed. The casual Child and Youth Recreation Leader will support both Schools Out Program and the GBK Kids program based on program needs. These positions will support children and youth to build their social emotional resilience, communication skills, self-esteem and civic engagement. They will also work with the children and youth to develop activities that inspire, challenge, encourage them to grow and build a spirit of community

**Responsibilities**:

- Plan, implement, run and evaluate activities and programs for the United Way BC’s School’s Out Program
- Establish rapport, and initiate, develop, and maintain supportive and trusting culturally safe relationships with children, youth, and their families
- Program development in leadership, social emotional learning, health and wellness, social justice, community safety, and engagement activities.
- Work with youth to identify needs, provide culturally appropriate support and where appropriate connection to services, and work collaboratively to advocate for clients
- Support children, youth and families accessing Youth Space programs (both individually and group based), and Schools Out responding to immediate needs, and providing resources/supplies.
- Assist in planning, facilitating and implementing and evaluating groups and workshops with/for youth; life skills, recreational, cultural and social.
- Respond to any urgent needs and potential behavioral, mental health, emotional, or substance use concerns using trauma-informed practice
- Collaborate and support special events and field-trips in the community
- Where appropriate support administrative tasks: website/social media posts, creating and maintaining effective tracking systems, forms, record keeping and databases and other duties as required

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- Knowledge and competency in co-creating meaningful inclusive, culturally safe & appropriate programs/activities WITH children, youth and families that are fun, build social connection, build skills and engagement.
- Proven ability to connect with children & youth and meet them “where they’re at”
- Understanding the diverse needs of children & youth including marginalized youth experiencing homelessness or housing instability, living with mental health, substance use, challenging family dynamics and/or other social challenges
- Knowledge and experience in trauma-informed practice, child and adolescent development, harm reduction, mental health, substance use and system navigation, including government care
- Ability to be flexible, resourceful, and possess good time management skills
- Strong crisis intervention, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and comply with service standards
- Some knowledge of community resources
- Strong group facilitation with children and youth
- Able to work effectively independently and in collaboration with a team. Daytime and evening availability required.
- Proficiency in a second language is an asset

Education and Experience:

- At least 2 year’s experience working with vulnerable children and their families.
- At least 2 year’s experience working with school age and youth in a social recreational setting.
- Diploma, degree or attending education in Social Work, Child and Youth Care Counseling, Education Health Sciences, or related field
- Prior volunteer or work experience with vulnerable populations
- Understanding of Cultural Safety and Cultural Humility and approaching the work through a decolonized lens.
- Personal vehicle insured for business use, minimum $2 million liability and valid driver’s license and satisfactory current driver’s abstract (mileage paid)
- Current First Aid, CPR, and/or Foodsafe certification
- Clean Criminal record check

Job Details:
**Salary**: ANHBC Band P4: $22.90-26.27/hr

**Date**: November 15, 2024

Pay: $22.90-$26.27 per hour

Expected hours: 24 per week

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
