Math Skills Coordinator

Reporting to the Manager, Learning Services, the incumbent delivers discipline-specific academic supports while also providing students multiple opportunities to bridge gaps in foundational numeracy skills. This role provides the college with a coordinated, consistent, and comprehensive approach to math skills supports. The incumbent is central to the tutoring centers in providing numeracy support services to the college community. The incumbent facilitates the activities of Math tutors and other co-op tutors in consultation with the Learning Services Team. The incumbent supports recruitment and administration of co-op tutors, including onboarding, training, scheduling and supporting tutors in their role of assisting with student learning. The incumbent develops and delivers math resources. They lead the delivery of math practice sessions and workshops. They also engage directly with students through 1:1 tutoring appointments. The incumbent conducts outreach and regular communication with faculty members to ensure that Math skills and other relevant supports are meeting the needs of faculty and students. They are responsible for data collection along with preparing and providing analysis reports on trends and outcomes of their interventions to the Manager and Learning Services team members.

What You’ll be Doing

Facilitating the activities of Math and other co-op tutors in consultation with the Learning Services team;
Supporting recruitment and administration of tutors including preparing paperwork for new student hires;
Supporting onboarding and training each term including midterm training sessions;
Developing the schedule for tutors and monitoring attendance;
Conducting outreach and regular communication with faculty members to ensure tutoring is running smoothly in their course(s) and soliciting updates or changes from faculty for the upcoming term;
Engaging in data-analysis and reporting on trends and outcomes of course and program-level tutoring;
Instructing, training and coaching tutors on Math skills development tools and strategies to support student learning;
Maintaining relationship with Sheridan’s Math programs to promote opportunities in the tutoring centres;
Developing and delivering foundational numeracy content;
Developing foundational literacy resources for sharing in multiple formats;
Delivering workshops in and outside of the classroom;
Coordinating and/or leading math skills practice sessions (e.g. exam crams)

Collaborates with faculty to determine their needs and the needs of their students for targeted services and content;
Conducting both 1:1 and group appointments with students to develop students’ math skills (e.g. steps for solving math problems, use of terminology to express the math solution, use of excel and Statistical Package for the Science Sciences [SPSS] software, use of calculators and other math apps and tools).

Building student confidence when facing deadlines and due dates;
Supporting remedial math, including arithmetic and basic algebra;
Helping English Language Learner (ELL) students with the language of math;
Conducting research and contributing to program/service maintenance and enhancement;
Researching new and valid teaching methods and strategies (e.g. through professional journals and materials) to assist students with their numeracy skills;
Analyzing current practices and develops new activities, interventions and strategic approaches using initiative and creativity, to meet individual student needs;
Curates learning resources for the Well Series;
Performing other related duties as assigned.

You have a highly collaborative spirit and excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to facilitate conversations effectively.

You have the ability to prepare and present educational topics to groups of faculty, staff or students.

You have excellent math skills.

4-year degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Physics, Statistics, or related field; Masters degree preferred (preference will be given to applicants who have one or more university degrees in Mathematics and related program)

3 years of teaching experience, including experience supporting student academic services (such as tutoring), ideally in a post-secondary environment (equivalency will be considered)

Experience collecting, recording, analyzing, reporting and presenting data

Experience supporting foundational numeracy skills in an educational institution (preferred)

Certified and Licensed with the Ontario College of Teachers
