**Detox Support Worker** **Reports to**: Medically Supported Detox Manager **Job Summary** The Detox Support Worker, under the direction of the Medically Supported Detox Manager, will primarily be responsible to work collaboratively with nursing team while taking a lead role with intakes of potential clients in assessments, pat downs and other duties. Orientating new clients Safe Harbour Society's Medically Supportive Detox program as well as create and facilitate programming for our detox patients in but not limited to the areas of addiction, mental health management and successful living. Acting as an advocate for client groups within the community and agency, this leader will have the ability to flex within roles in the Detox team while working towards the common goal. This role will also respect and protect the rights of clients. **Competencies** - Compassion - Relationship - Truth telling & Peace Making - Adaptability - Client/Patient Focus - Communication - Cultural Sensitivity - Organization - Problem Solving - Professionalism - Resourceful - Results Orientation - Teamwork **Job Duties** - To become familiar with, and adhere to Safe Harbour Society’s Policies and Procedures. - To actively support and promote the “Mission, Vision and Beliefs” of the Society. - To represent Safe Harbour Society in a positive manner - at work and in the community. - To promote a mutually supportive team environment that emphasizes a collaborative approach and values the contributions of all members, including front line staff, guests and management. - Debriefing situations and/or critical incidents with team members and/or supervisor as they arise will promote open and respectful communication. - To offer support and resources to men and women experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a substance and/or desiring support to take a positive "next step" **Shift Responsibilities**: - Read previous communication book documentations (last 2 - 3 days minimum) - Meet with other team members (shift change, shift consolidation and as needed) to discuss any guest concerns or potential issues and to plan strategies for shift, including role of each staff in the event of a crisis situation. - Assess Detox work area including washrooms - check for supplies, burned out lights, clean blankets, socks, etc. including any potential safety concerns, - Wash and dry laundry, change client bedding and clean beds as required - Take referrals over the phone - Collaborate with nurses in triage and decision making about admissions - Take a lead role in Admissions, obtaining initial consent, caring for the client through initial patdowns and management of belongings, including disposal of sharps, drugs and paraphernalia - Orientating new guests to detox policies and procedures, guidelines/rules and expectations including confidentiality and privacy. - Orientating new guests to physical layout of detox including washrooms, kitchen, staff office; Identify exits and evacuation plan in the event of an emergency - Keep daily statistics related to admissions and discharges - Search, store and manage client belongings and valuables - Discharges: assist team in making arrangements and return of all belongings and referrals - Encourage client participation in chore assignment and activities ( arts and crafts, games) - Report any changes in client functioning to nurse - Complete accurate support worker notes on client files - Develop an action plan in conjunction with guest - to include the following: (this may be completed immediately or once withdrawal symptoms lessen) - Identification of need in addition to detox i.e. housing issues, mental health services, employment, financial, medical, legal - Provide guests with information about treatment options and supports as well as housing, employment opportunities or training, and financial assistance as requested or as indicated in action plan - Ensure guest has given signed consent before staff discusses guest with outside agency - Providing regular follow up support and consistent tracking of guest’s progress toward goal achievement - Adapting and adjusting of goal plan as guest and staff deem necessary - Monitor guests while completing hourly bed checks - ensure they are not in crisis i.e. breathing normal. Increase bed checks if guest’s withdrawal symptoms warrant it. Document all relevant information. - Monitor shelter environment for safety - observe and assess agitation levels among guests in order to defuse potentially risky situations - Ensure all incidents are properly documented and any concerns/recommendations are communicated to supervisor - Keep up to date on community resources and/or agencies that may assist or benefit guest in achieving goals - Communicate with staff in other programs during shift - as necessary to ensure seamless service to guests **Other Responsibilities** - Attend all mandatory staff training - Attend all general staff meetings - Other duties as assigned or r
