The Manager, Indigenous Education leads and manages key Indigenous education initiatives, aligned with the university’s strategic priorities, the university’s commitments to Indigenous Peoples and associated framework for action, and the academic strategic plan and work to advance reconciliation, decolonization and Indigenization.
- The Manager focuses on building capacity across the institution to better serve Indigenous Peoples and students. They propose, plan, coordinate and implement a wide range of initiatives designed to create culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff, deepening understandings of ontologies and Indigenous Knowledges. This includes supporting the development of curriculum and learning resources, sharing information and practices on teaching related to residential schools and Indigenous Peoples’ histories, building intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect, and developing and implementing an academic portfolio education and training plan. The Manager also proposes and implements feedback channels for Indigenous student to inform the continuous improvement of educational experiences and academic and student support services.
- As a member of the small Indigenous Education team whose time and talents are highly demanded, the Manager will be called upon to work collaboratively in support of team members and the work of the unit in general.- Job Requirements-
- Indigenous ancestry
- A master’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience working in Indigenous education, student services, or related fields, with at least 2 years of experience in a leadership or managerial capacity, preferably in British Columbia.
- High level of cultural competency, with sensitivity to and understanding of Indigenous worldviews, protocols, and practices.
- Proven experience in program development, project management, and student support services, particularly within the context of Indigenous communities and within post-secondary institutions.
- Strong working knowledge of The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Calls to Action of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, and the Calls for Justice of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls.
- In-depth understanding of and proven ability to share information and education on Indigenous teachings and practices, treaties and Indigenous rights, history and legacy of residential schools, building awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people and about the issues and root causes of violence they experience, skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism with diverse audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, and staff, requiring superior communication and interpersonal skills, in face-to-face and online settings; experience with communicating effectively with people of diverse origins and identities is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and lead initiatives with a focus on collaboration and community engagement.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Experience in budget management and resource allocation, ensuring effective use of funds for program delivery.
- Ability to work independently, with initiative and sound judgment, while managing sensitive and confidential information.-
- Additional Information- This is a regular, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. This position has been evaluated at ME-B with a salary range of $105,292 (minimum) to $123,872 (midpoint) to $142,453 (maximum) per annum. Employment offers will normally be made between the minimum and midpoint of the range and are determined by knowledge, experience and internal equity.
