Under the direct supervision of a senior staff member, the Research Associate provides scientific support to the applied research sector of the company.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
Design and carry out experiments toward completion of the assigned projects. Responsible for the successful completion of assigned projects. Develop design of experiments (DOE), workplans and Statements of Work (SOW) and write reports under supervision with final report approved by the Principal Scientist, Innovation and Technology.
Act as a Research Associate for projects ranging in technical complexity from working on less complicated and low risk level projects to assisting senior scientists by working out technical details leading towards solutions to a specific problem. This involves the following:
- Researching independently;
- Problem solving;
- Use of judgement to confirm accuracy;
- Thorough instrument knowledge;
- Business sense/familiarity;
- Preparation of SOPs and Directives;
- Basic analyses (support POS analytical department - off shift analytical support may require);
- Sample and product handling;
- Report Writing
Develop/improve scientific skills in evaluating/interpreting and communicating project results. Acquire increased scientific knowledge, skills and capabilities, under the direct supervision of the senior scientist(s).
Ensure timely and accurate documentation and records of progress for internal team and client use.
Remain current within the industry and up to date on technical knowledge in the area of specialization. Keep up to date with new developments to ensure that innovations are effectively integrated, in existing methods and techniques and that possible novel approaches may be pursued.
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Bachelor of Science in a related field.
- M.Sc.. in Chemistry, Food Science and related field is an asset.
- Entry level may be considered with no experience
- Knowledge of chemicals and safety (WHMIS) is required.
- Knowledge of oils/fats processing (marine, oilseeds, and biomass) is required.
- Working knowledge of Word and Excel; ability to learn specialized in-house programs including the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System.
- Familiarity with and ability to execute programs requiring Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) techniques.
- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice principles; knowledge of all GLP responsibilities associated with the GLP position of Principal Investigator

**CONDITIONS OF WORK**
- Exposed to carcinogens, cleaning chemicals, flammables, hazardous chemicals/materials, dust and fumes, acids, caustics, other chemicals. Work with hot materials, wet environments.
- Travel: occasional training/business
- Risk of chemical vapors which are used at any given time for extraction and compressed gases (R& D more; Analytical on a smaller scale).
- High pressure processes
- The nature of the business and work environment may affect individuals who are prone to allergies.
**PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS**
- Physical: light to moderate lifting on an occasional basis, i.e. up to 10 or 50 kilos.
