**JOB OVERVIEW: Payroll Analyst**

This role reports to the Manager, Payroll Operations.

The Payroll Analyst is responsible for verifying the accuracy of payroll processing and data by performing audits on payroll activities and develops controls to ensure quality assurance. They are responsible for planning, coordinating and scheduling of various payroll reports.

This position ensures monthly reconciliations are performed and that account remittances are processed on time. They perform complex reconciliations of payroll accounts confirming information is uploaded to the General Ledger. The Payroll Analyst performs regular audits to ensure payroll data accuracy and compliance with legislation, collective agreements and working terms and conditions while also responsible for ensuring accurate employee records are maintained in accordance with legislation and University policy.

In collaboration with HRIS and IT the Payroll Analyst researches payroll system errors and makes recommendations for solutions. They assist the Payroll Leadership in coordinating the implementation and administration of mandated payroll regulations and policies and provide confidential statistical and financial analysis of payroll and benefits information.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Diploma in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field is required.
- A Certified Payroll Compliance Professional and/or Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent experience.
- A minimum 5 years’ experience in a unionized environment, including a minimum 2 years’ experience in data analytics
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience using payroll software.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

**COMPETENCIES**
- Experience in system implementations and process improvements with an integrated system in a large, complex unionized environment.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various key party groups.
- Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, policies, collective agreements, procedures and payroll related tax filings in Canada.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and to administer the privacy and freedom of information (FOIPOP) regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, and communicate information effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to investigate and resolve issues and discrepancies, and make recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, and to plan, prioritize, organize and implement work schedules to meet strict deadlines and work with mínimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of initiative, responsibility and accountability while being a proactive, organized and energetic team player.
- Maintains current knowledge in new or existing standards, regulations and laws relevant to payroll.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze information, resolve problems and recommend solutions.
- Excellent computer skills including advanced proficiency with Excel.
- Experience with journal entries and balance reconciliations is preferred.
- Ability to travel between campuses is required

**Salary Information**

The compensation range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary (as listed above) for a position. Approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and approximately halfway of the salary range for a job. Annual salary increases are available through participation in the Administrative Performance Management program
