The portfolio is responsible for quality assurance for all undergraduate programs. ISSAP is an excellent model of this and the Office of the Vice Provost works closely in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Center through this pathway in addition to other departments. - The ISSAP program is committed to providing excellent supports to Indigenous students seeking pathway into STEM fields. - Increase representation of Indigenous students across STEM degrees at Western. - Eliminate barriers to education that exist due to systemic marginalization of Indigenous students. - Create pathways of mentorship across STEM degrees - Assure ISSAP students receive crucial tutoring and academic supports during their school year. - Align actionable goals with Western’s strategic plan and Strategic plan developed by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives **Responsibilities**: The graduate tutor in Pre-Degree sciences will implement weekly to biweekly tutoring sessions to support ISSAP students during the 2024/2025 school year. The role will require expertise in the following Science pre-degree courses: (Chemistry grade 11, Chemistry grade 12, Physics grade 11, and Physics grade 12) which the current student cohort is taking virtually. The graduate tutor will need to work very closely with the ISSAP Academic Advisor in scheduling hours of supports and active collaborative sessions to make sure students are successful in their virtual courses. Consequently, the role also contributes to the unit's goals around eliminating barriers of education as well as increasing academic supports for ISSAP students during their one year journey. Crucial responsibilities include: - Work very closely with the ISSAP Academic Advisor (Office of Academic Programs) and the Manager of Indigenous Admissions (Office of the ISC), to schedule sessions and implement instructional tutoring opportunities either in one on one settings or in groups settings - Work collaboratively with the Indigenous Student Center, and faculty of Science on Careers and Professional experience to effectively develop skills in working with systemically marginalized communities. - Work closely with the ISSAP Academic Advisor and Manager Admissions within the Indigenous Student Center in developing workshops for success with ISSAP students while supporting their challenges and celebrating their progress and successes. Professional Qualifications and Education - Minimum Required: - Graduate level degree in a Science module with extensive experience in secondary school sciences, specifically in Chemistry grade 11, Chemistry grade 12, Physics Grade 11, Physics Grade 12. - Experience working with university students - Experienced with the pre-degree Sciences mentioned above - Empathetic and patient - Knowledge of Chemistry grade 11: Matter, Chemical trends, Bonding and Reactions, quantities in chemical reactions, solutions and solubility, Gases and atmospheric Chemistry - Knowledge of Physics grade 11: Kinematics, Dynamics, Energy, Electricity magnetism, Waves - Knowledge of Chemistry grade 12: Structure and Properties of Matter, Energy and rates of reaction, Chemical systems and equilibrium, organic chemistry, Electrochemistry - Physics Grade 12: Dynamics, energy momentum, fields, waves, modern physics - High degree of professionalism and knowledge of conflict resolution/management theory and practices - Outstanding relationship building skills and ability to manage relationships with students - Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coach students through tutoring sessions, demonstrating tact, emotional intelligence, and cultural sensitivity - Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of studen
