**KEY FUNCTION**:
Perform tasks for patients to support activities of daily living before and after surgery (i.e direct patient care as a Personal Support Worker). Clean, dress and relocate stretchers. Porter patients for procedures and for discharge. Act as a liaison between patient and family member communicating updates. Stock and prepare bays/department for patients.
**REPORTING**:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Pre-Admission/Day Surgery/Surgical Short Stay, Blood Conservation, Pain Management.
**DUTIES**:
- Provide patient care within Personal Support Worker scope of practice as required.
- Assist patients in their basic care, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, mobilization (i.e. dressing/changing, transferring, mobilizing, toileting).
- Interact with patients, families and visitors providing information and support.
- Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of patients at all times.
- Assist with patient flow and transportation of patients to other departments/units/discharge Perform patient liaison duties to provide communication to family members about their loved one in surgery and when they will be ready for discharge.
- Operate mechanical lifts and utilize assistive devices as directed.
- Prepare bays and SDC/SSSU area for patients.
- Clean, disinfect and dress stretchers/beds, relocating as required.
- Keep department and bays organized, stocked with inventory, linens, supplies.
- Perform cleaning of office spaces and recovery bays including cupboards, shelves, and drawers.
- Transfer, deliver and/or collect: linen, rubbish, infectious waste, patient files, x-rays, specimens and equipment.
- Restock direct purchases of department supplies as required.
- Monitor and restock department inventory.
- Enter requisitions for maintenance of equipment and building services as required.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Participate in hospital training as required.
- Assist with improvement initiatives as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**EDUCATION AND TRAINING**:
- Minimum of a Personal Support Worker Certificate from an accredited college.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
- Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Gentle Persuasion Approaches (GPA) to dementia care are preferred.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
**EXPERIENCE**:
- Minimum of six (6) months’ experience working as a Personal Support Worker in a hospital setting.
- Six (6) months’ experience working as an Environmental Service Worker including portering in a hospital setting is preferred.
**KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES**:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Asepsis.
- Demonstrated knowledge of IPAC isolation standards.
- Demonstrated ability to safely transport patients and handle equipment/materials.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients, physicians, volunteers and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of equipment used in the delivery of patient care.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks.
- Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
