Under direct supervision, the Utility 2 performs a variety of duties that includes: routine manual work of a semi-skilled nature, requiring a mechanical aptitude for the operation and routine maintenance of vehicles, power tools and non-complex equipment.

**As the** **_Utility 2,_** **you will**:

- Operate vehicles and equipment required for performance of duties e.g. power saws and ¾ ton trucks.
- Responsible for assigned vehicle and equipment signed out under their general care.
- Assist with the maintenance and makes minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Perform construction and maintenance operations using manual and power tools.
- Remove and repairs public trees, maintains turf areas, and prunes and plants trees.
- Complete reports and records as required in written or electronic format.
- Be responsible for the safe use and care of tools/equipment used.
- Follow established safe work practices, operating policies and procedures.
- Perform tasks of an emergency nature.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- Grade 10 education or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience at the Utility classification or performing duties to those of a Utility classification.
- Must have successfully completed the following courses:
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS
- Temporary Traffic Control
- Operator Training (job related powered mobile ride on equipment & powered hand held)
- Willingness and ability to take and successfully complete additional courses and training as required by the Department including but not limited to:
- Chainsaw/Tree felling
- Ability in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, hand tools & power tools consistent with classification.
- Ability to understand, execute and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to carry out the duties of the junior classifications.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety regulations, policies and procedures, including the ability to adhere to and enforce safety rules and policies.

**Conditions of employment**:

- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- In accordance with Legislative and the Department’s requirements, this position requires one of the following for the **permanent Utility 2 position only**, as listed below:

- Must have successful completion of the Manitoba Arborists Certification Course before July 1, 2019, or
- If currently holding, a previously issued Manitoba Arborists License valid after October 1, 2017, or
- Must hold a valid ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Arborist Certification or equivalent as recognized by designated authorizing body, within 6 months of appointment to the position, or
- Must successfully complete the Manitoba Arborist Training Course within 6 months of appointment to the position.
- Must be capable of working at various heights, working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions, and have the ability to walk over uneven terrain including snow, ice and riverbanks.
- Must be willing and able to work shift work, standby and overtime at various locations as needed. Emergency situations may require duties to be performed beyond normal schedules.
