DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Relations, the Indigenous Relations Liaison will play a key role in providing various levels of support on our project. The Indigenous Relations Liaison will help build positive relationships between surrounding Indigenous communities, and the Project Team. In addition, the Indigenous Relations Liaison will engage with members of the community/communities to gain a better understanding of project execution processes, to create awareness and allow for a transparent and respectful relationship. Exceptional communication skills, verbal/non-verbal and written, and the ability to work independently and as a part of a team are key skills to succeed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions. Stop work in the area of an identified health or safety problem until resolved.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with surrounding Indigenous Peoples and Michels Canada’s project team to facilitate the on-going identification and resolution of their respective concerns affecting project objectives and regular or weekly/monthly/quarterly reporting
- Act as a liaison between the organization and Indigenous stakeholders to ensure open communication and mutual understanding.
- Provide cultural competency training to staff and stay informed about current Indigenous issues.
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop and implement policies that reflect respect for Indigenous rights.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements and ethical standards related to Indigenous relations.
- Plan and execute community engagement initiatives to involve Indigenous communities in decision-making processes.
- Organize events, workshops, and forums to promote dialogue and build positive relationships.
- Facilitate meaningful consultation processes with Indigenous communities on projects or initiatives.
- Advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in organizational decision-making processes.
- Develop and maintain metrics to measure the success of Indigenous relations initiatives.
**REQUIREMENTS**:
- 10+ years experience in Indigenous Relations preferably in the heavy civil construction industry.
- Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Business or Finance
- Must possess a valid driver license for the type(s) of vehicles which may be driven and an acceptable driving record
- Working Knowledge of Microsoft Computer Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
- Experience in utility construction industry as it relates to Indigenous Peoples concerns is preferred
- Good Understanding of Indigenous Culture, Customs and Treaties and knowledgeable of MBA’s as it applies to large scale development projects.
DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Broad project or policy experience related to environmental or natural resources management with respect to utility infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders and resources such as government, clients, special interest groups and the public.
- Confident ability to lead or participate in facilitations and conflict resolution with Indigenous Peoples communities, clients and public.
