**Apprentice Carpenter**

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Reports To: Site Superintendent

Summary: Performs carpentry tasks throughout the assigned multi-family projects.

Direct Reports: As Directed

*This is a learning position with the intention of developing future Forepersons and Site Supervisors

Key Functions/Responsibilities:

- Is responsible for achieving/exceeding the schedule on all assigned tasks while maintaining the quality as specified
- In conjunction with the Site Superintendent, implements procedures to improve job site productivity & improve “product quality”
- General cleanup, carpentry, hoarding, safety implementation (handrails, guards, barriers, fencing) and other typical construction tasks
- Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes
- Grind, scrape, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete or wood flooring, using abrasive tools or machines
- Load, unload, identify building materials, machinery, and tools, check packing slips and distribute them to the appropriate locations
- Construction trailer, first aid and lunch room trailer cleanup and maintenance
- Coordinates equipment utilization & service with the Superintendent and identifies maintenance requirements to ensure optimum production & equipment utilization
- Able to understand verbal and written instructions
- Adept at establishing relationships with all parties involved in the construction process that facilitate harmonious working relationships during project, and permit prompt resolution of problems and conflicts as they occur
- Able to complete and fulfill paperwork required for personal time sheets in a timely manner
- Job requires ability to perform tasks on all areas and aspects of construction project. Requires ability to climb ladders for heights of up to 60 feet, and crawl for distances of 50 feet
- Job requires ability to work with tools, lumber and materials. Ability to lift and manipulate objects of up to 80 lbs for 50 feet is required

- Tools and equipment - ensure they are operating & maintaining the tools and equipment according to acceptable corporate standards
- Abide by the corporate safety program (standard & safe working practices) and reports on any incidents to the site superintendent including safety of workers, public and all construction personnel
- Able to organize assigned tasks, for completion alone or with help
- Complete other responsibilities as required

Qualifications:

- Minimum 3rd year Apprentice Carpenter, currently registered an active with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT). We also welcome 4th year and Journeyman Carpenter applicants. Red seal an asset but not required.
- Minimum of 3 years in all phases of residential and/or commercial construction
- Knowledge of residential construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety
- Proficient at the following tasks: stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows, layout for stairs and common rafters, read blueprints, utilize appropriate math skills
- Able to read blueprints
- Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates
- Able to understand verbal and written instructions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Problem-solving ability
- Adept at establishing relationships with all parties involved in the construction process that facilitate positive working relationships with team members and trades
