The Field Safety Specialist is responsible for educating operational leaders and frontline employees on safe work practices, field monitoring to ensure practices comply with occupational health and safety requirements, Nova Scotia Power Safety Program NSP policies and applicable OHS legislation, and reporting & investigation of workplace incidents and accidents.

Key elements of this role include:

- Actively in the field on a daily basis, engaging with operations to educate on safe work practices and policies and to monitor compliance with Safety Management System (SMS).
- Work toward an integrated approach to safety through continuous improvement of systems and processes.
- Support implementation of strategic safety initiatives including Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) prevention, focusing on STKY (stuff that can kill you) and psychological health and safety.
- Work closely with management and the IBEW in developing Safe Work Practices
- Perform field safety Observations and provide real time feedback to operational leaders and frontline employees.
- Assist JOHSC Investigation teams in determining immediate and root factors associated with an incident and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
- Measure the compliance of your assigned operating area with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing
- Track safety performance and identify trends, communicate trends with supervisors and support the development of an appropriate response to the trends
- Required to participate in Stand-By Rotation and be readily available to respond via phone, log into computer, or to go to site if necessary, at all times during assigned period.
- Provide coaching & advise on safety related issues to all levels of the business.
- Provide technical advice as it relates to safety
- Ensure all Safety Program are properly communicated to operations, employees are trained and are adhering to safety programs in their work.
- Facilitate meetings with clients concerning safety initiatives.
- Act as a Liaison with regulatory agencies as required.
- Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent safety message is delivered.
- Work with other utilities and industries as appropriate to improve safety in the workplace.

**Education & Experience**
- Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Technical or Trade Certification in Electrical or another applicable field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in an industrial environment, preferably within the transmission and distribution operation of an electrical utility.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Canadian Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) designation considered an asset.

**Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**
- Ability to work collaboratively with others to affect a safety culture mindset and improved safety performance at work sites.
- Self-motivated with demonstrated experience working independently.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner.
- Understanding of risk assessment and risk management concepts.
- Awareness of provincial and federal occupational health & safety legislation, regulations, and processes.
- Possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License (Class 5 with 2 years minimum driving experience) and have a clean driver’s abstract and ability to travel within the province as required.
- Ability to read a GPS and navigate to site.
