These plants are critical in providing reliable and efficient power to meet the growing energy needs of Alberta. Each facility utilizes advanced gas turbine and steam turbine technology, ensuring a robust and dependable energy supply for the region.
**Opportunity Summary**
The purpose of this position is to prepare, train, and qualify for the role of Operations Technician. While primarily based at the Cavalier Energy Centre, you may also be required to support the Calgary and Shepard Energy Centres to familiarize yourself with their operations and provide assistance as needed. Upon successful completion of training and based on operational needs, the Training Pool Operator may be promoted to a permanent Operations Technician position.
As an essential member of the team, you will be responsible for the overall safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power generation facility. Your extensive knowledge and experience in operating power generation or related industrial system equipment will enable you to take hands-on responsibility for starting, stopping, and monitoring all plant equipment.
Your familiarity with and use of Distributed Control System (DCS) equipment, condition monitoring tools, and proven equipment inspection techniques will be critical to your success in this role.
As part of the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team, you will contribute to the overall success of the facility by supporting predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities. Day-to-day work direction will be coordinated by the Cavalier Energy Centre Operations Coordinator.
**Primary Functions**
- Supports facility operations by overseeing all work at the facility, including collaborating with suppliers and contractors to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
- Monitors physical and cyber access to the plant, reports breaches in real time, and ensures compliance with security protocols. Builds and maintains positive relationships with suppliers and contractors, ensuring that deliveries and work are completed safely and efficiently.
- Understands and follows inventory systems and procedures, actively participating in stock-taking activities when required.
- Effectively uses organisational IT systems, including the CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) and document management systems, for daily operations and historical record-keeping.
- Takes responsibility for designated systems or areas during planned maintenance outages to ensure necessary work is effectively addressed.
- Ensures the implementation and management of safe work systems at the facility, including but not limited to lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work permits, and work authorisation protocols.
- Operates and manages environmental regulatory monitoring systems with a focus on achieving the highest standards of compliance and accuracy.
- Provides concise and timely information for internal and external reporting purposes.
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of Alberta Reliability Standards and fulfils operational roles in alignment with these requirements.
- Contributes to the development of quality assurance standards and procedures, participating in audits, inspections, and assessments to drive continuous improvement.
- Aids in developing plant performance key performance indicators (KPIs) based on equipment expertise and works toward achieving targets through innovation and continuous improvement.
- Provides operational feedback and identifies areas for improvement to support long-range equipment planning and the development of the major maintenance plan.
- Takes ownership of tools used in daily activities and preventive maintenance work, ensuring their longevity and value to the plant.
- Develops and implements risk management practices based on equipment history and maintenance findings.
- Strives to meet goals established as part of incentive compensation targets.
- Actively pursues training and development opportunities to qualify for promotion to the role of Operations Technician, working toward the necessary skills and experience for career advancement.
- Travels to, works at, and familiarizes with the operations of the Cavalier Energy Centre, Calgary Energy Centre, and Shepard Energy Centre to enhance cross-facility knowledge and contribute to the broader operational team.
- Undertakes additional duties as assigned by the team leader.
