The City has an exciting opportunity for an Articling Student in 2025/2026 to work in a team-oriented environment of 70+ municipal lawyers. Our legal work is fast-paced, complex, and varied. Some recent examples include appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada as an intervenor, advising on the largest infrastructure project in Calgary's history, defending The City's Safe and Inclusive Access Bylaw from Charter/constitutional challenge, and supporting the work of Council and Administration on key strategies and initiatives, including the Calgary Climate Strategy and Calgary's Housing Strategy.

As an Articling Student, you will work on a variety of different files, with the support and mentorship of a Principal Lawyer. This position will have a broad focus on municipal law, working with lawyers in all Sections: Administrative Law, Litigation & Expropriation, Municipal Law & Enforcement, Corporate Commercial & Finance, Planning & Real Estate, and the Green Line Project. Primary duties include:

- Provide a high quality of client service in assisting other lawyers and internal clients on a variety of different files.
- Conduct legal research, writing and drafting, legal analysis, preparation of facts and written memorandums and briefs.
- Investigate facts, identify issues, ascertain organizational objectives, and work proactively to seek innovative solutions to complex legal issues.
- Conduct bylaw prosecutions, Small Claims litigation files, and other administrative tribunal work.
- Complete PREP requirements throughout the articling year.

**Qualifications**
- Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and approval from the Law Society of Alberta to be an articling student.
- Proven self-management skills, high energy, and self-motivation.
- Strong interpersonal, communication (both verbal and written) and conflict management skills.
- An ability to identify and raise issues of concern and recommend effective solutions and the ability to thrive in a team environment are also essential.
