Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) is currently seeking a Wellness Practitioner who is an Alberta Registered Psychologist or Canadian Certified Counsellor. This position is focused on supporting, promoting, and sustaining staff wellness.
What We Do
YESS is a not-for-profit agency working with youth facing difficult realities. Based in Edmonton, YESS provides immediate and low-barrier 24/7 shelter, a drop-in resource centre, temporary supportive housing, and individualized wrap-around supports for young people aged 15-24.
We work collaboratively within a network of care focused on the prevention of youth homelessness by providing youth with the necessary supports to stabilize their housing, improve their wellbeing, build life skills, connect with community, and avoid re-entry into homelessness.
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Manager of Wellness and Integration, the Wellness Practitioner will offer skills and strategies to assist staff to better understand, cope with, and process emotions surrounding their experiences, with the end goal of enabling staff to create more authentic and adaptive meaning of their experiences and improve their day-to-day functioning.
The Wellness Practitioner will support the mental health and well-being of staff by offering multiple meeting options (in-person, virtually, telephone and text therapy) to individual staff, teams and departments to support developing awareness, resiliency and wellness. You will provide the staff with training and education on trauma-informed care, offer individual support sessions following work-related incidents, develop insights, identify strengths, and enhance personal resilience. Additionally, the Wellness Practitioner will work with the staff to connect them to wellness resources to further aid them in their healing, development, discovery, and actualization.
As the Wellness Practitioner, you will have flexible meeting options (outside, walks, in office, for coffee, virtual, telephone, text) to debrief with staff following incidents, support their self-care regime, address how the work impacts them and offer tangible solutions to implement change in their everyday You will meet with individuals, teams and departments to prevent compassion fatigue, identify signs of burnout and teach skills such as nervous system regulation and conflict resolution.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide staff with trauma
- informed care orientation
- Hold reflection sessions with staff to assist them in processing their upbringing with boundaries and power dynamics and how it may impact their work
- Offer a framework for what staff can work on with their personal therapist or in their life in general
- Identity their attachment style & trauma responses to understand its impact on their work
- Provide career counselling
- Offer support for staff goals (even if they are personal goals) to create a holistic pathway to success
- Assist staff with motivational interview sessions centered around a singular goal
- Provide mental health training to equip staff with healthy methods of dealing with work-related and personal trauma that may be experienced
- Meet with teams and departments to support wellness and prevent compassion fatigue
Additionally, you will provide a professional level of service to donors, promote the agency in a positive manner to the outside community and share information, communicate, and collaborate with other YESS staff.
What You Bring
**Education**: Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and are registered with a governing body such as The Alberta College of Psychologists or The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy association.
**Experience**: Minimum of 2 years of directly related experience in:
- Trauma relevant education
- Extensive Trauma-Informed Care training
- Harm Reduction training
- Personality typing experience
- Motivational Interviewing
- Somatic Impacts
- Nervous system awareness
- Attachment Styles
- Trauma Responses
**Required experience**:
- Working within a multi-disciplinary team, preferably with a non-profit
- Single-session model
- Depth or phenomenological psychotherapy sessions
- Crisis management, de-escalation and debrief processing
- Working 1:1 with individuals towards change
- Data collection, analysis & outcome management
- Facilitating groups and workshops
- Familiarity with issues of youth homelessness, mental illness and addiction, social work, or relevant areas
**Preference **will be given to those who have:
- Experience and maturity with diverse modes of counselling
- Experience working with high-risk youth
- Experience working with immediate crisis, crisis debrief and support
- Experience public speaking or in facilitation
**Prerequisites**
- Clear police clearance (CRIM) obtained within the last six months
- Child and Youth Intervention (CYIM) check obtained within the last six months
