The Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the office of the Chief, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS) and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS).
**Role Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Inspector, Staff Development Unit, the Education Programs Specialist is a key contributor to the development and delivery of high-quality, sustainable training programs within the Sheriffs Branch. This role supports the Ministry’s strategic goals by designing and managing peace officer training initiatives grounded in best practices and adult learning principles. Working closely with senior leadership and a wide network of stakeholders, the Specialist helps shape the Branch’s learning and development strategy, evaluates and refines curricula, and integrates emerging trends to ensure training remains effective, relevant, and forward-thinking.
Responsibilities of this role include:
- Design and develop law enforcement training programs for recruits and in-service officers, ensuring alignment with adult learning principles, industry standards, and peace officer accreditation requirements.
Advise leadership and instructors on best practices in instructional design, training delivery, and program development to support high-quality learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners—including justice agencies and academic institutions—to ensure programs remain current, effective, and aligned with broader public and officer safety goals.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below. Relevant fields include Education, Criminal Justice, or degrees focused on adult learning, educational leadership, or curriculum design.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
The position requires:
- Expertise in instructional methodologies, policy and process development and accreditation criteria
- Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs
- Knowledge of emerging training methods, technology, and research methodologies
- Familiarity with Ministry business strategies, priorities, and GOA learning and development initiatives
- Strong communication, facilitation, and negotiation skills, along with creativity and analytical abilities, to offer guidance, leadership, and expertise to instructors.
