JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Anishinaabewaadiziwin is seeking an experienced and skilled individual to conduct research and provide analysis, advice and advocacy that reflects the program’s priorities with respect to First Nations traditional healing and wellness.
The role of the Program Policy Analyst is to support department’s priority areas with the identification, development and evaluation of Policies and Procedures pertaining to First Nations health and wellness in health care. The Analyst will analyze, document, and coordinate recommendations/options to promote the improvement of culturally appropriate and best practices in health care services. The Analyst will have a high level understanding of policy initiatives and will be responsible for briefings and reports for both internal and external communications. The Analyst will facilitate linkages between government policy directions and community directions and will support the advocacy of First Nations health care.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct comprehensive research on traditional healing and wellness policies and best practices.
- Present research findings and provide expert advice on traditional healing and wellness policy-related matters.
- Evaluate existing policies and regulations to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and areas of improvement.
- Explore opportunities for funding through proposals and partnerships with other agencies.
- Collect, create, analyze, and disseminate information and evidence to support health planning and decision making.
- Research, review, monitor and analyze provincial and federal government initiatives, legislation, policy, and operational plans which affect the health and health services for First Nations in the Sioux Lookout area.
- Draft correspondence, proposals, discussion papers, internal documents, and briefing notes.
- Liaise with First Nations, organizations, and other service agencies.
- Identify effective methods of knowledge transfer based on specific targeted audiences.
- Provide support and continued implementation for the traditional healing and wellness framework.
- Provide support for the regional strategic health planning function of SLFNHA and facilitate the continued implementation of the Anishinabe Health Plan.
- All other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
- Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset.
- Post-secondary degree in health policy, public health, public administration, or related discipline and/or combined relevant experience.
- One (1) to three (3) years working experience in policy
- Ability to communicate in one of the First Nation dialects within the Sioux Lookout Zone an asset.
- Experience in a project management capacity
- Demonstrated understanding of and competence in, serving culturally diverse populations knowledgeable of First Nations’ people, history, culture, health priorities and social issues.
- Must have working knowledge of political, legislative and regulatory process impacting First Nations health and First Nations governance.
- Knowledge of the complex health service delivery landscape in northern Ontario and the inter-jurisdictional issues as they relate to the First Nations health.
- Ability to prepare and deliver high quality written reports and presentations for diverse audiences with the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and respectfully.
- Understand and facilitate First Nations health program design and the interrelationship with health policy and legislation.
- Experience with First Nations community engagement, community-based research and First Nations decision making processes.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, advocacy, and organizational skills.
- Must be willing and able to travel (northern, rural and urban areas).
- Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including overtime when required.
