Job Summary
The Manager, Academic Innovation & Program Advancement, in collaboration with the Division Head, along with core division members, will conceptualize plans and provide leadership to the Division of Upper Extremity (UEx). As the primary point of contact within the Division, and working closely with the Division Lead, the Manager will initially identify the structure required for establishing a sustainable funding model for the Division and working towards coordinating UBC and any external resources required to support development. The Manager will support academic innovation through curriculum management, program development, and research management. The incumbent will be responsible for working with Division members to lead the planning and execution of curriculum, research projects, and programs from initial conception to completion and be responsible for Faculty level program management. With this responsibility, the Manager will guide program development and evaluation, identify barriers, and assess financial impacts collaborating with faculty, program leads, and staff across Department of Orthopaedics and the University.
The primary goal is to garner assistance in developing a business plan to establish a funding model (consistent revenue stream) to help sustain innovative clinical practice and research programming for the Division. This unique position requires personnel with knowledge in the areas of orthopaedics, research methodologies, and academia, and one that can engage in considerable networking to support the build of this Division.
Organizational Status
The Division of UEx nested under the Department of Orthopaedics and is composed of approximately 20 members. In 2023, the Division of Distal Extremity separated into the two separate divisions: Foot and Ankle and Upper Extremality. The Division of UEx is committed to a strategic vision of excellence in UEx surgery and the development of a provincial resource for complex UEx problems, inclusive of teaching, research, and innovation. Following the UEx Spring 2024 strategic planning meeting, various resources were identified as necessary to support the actionable priorities for implementing this vision. Specifically, a new staffing position requiring funding by the Department is proposed. This would be a key professional team member of the Division of UEx reporting directly to the Division Head and working closely with and under the broad direction of the Department Head, as well as working cooperatively with Department staff, individual Division Members, and affiliated programs to ensure all objectives, projects, and timelines are met. As well, the incumbent would liaise regularly with allied professional groups bridging the needs in each of the three pillar areas, Research, Education, and Clinical Practice.
The UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of mínimally invasive joint replacemen
