**Purpose**:
Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Technical Services, and in conjunction with the department's faculty members, the Civil Technician role is responsible for supporting assigned laboratories for both graduate, undergraduate students, and research personnel. The role assists with designing, proposing, preparing elements (e.g., soil) and/or creating structures to support student experiments/projects. The role, while possessing, maintaining, and seeking an expert level of knowledge of technical matters relating to the courses offered in the laboratories, assists in developing, implementing, and demonstrating laboratory experiments. The role will also assist in the design and creation of prototypes/projects for students enrolled in assigned laboratories as well as student laboratory manuals under the direction of course faculty, keeping the content and resources associated with the laboratories current, and providing documentation on the labs as required for professional accreditation of engineering programs. The Civil Technician role supports the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of the Lassonde School of Engineering and York University, and contributes to a positive, supportive, and student-focused team environment of high performance, respect, trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement, embraces diversity and fosters inclusion.

**Education**:
University degree in Engineering or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

**Experience**:
Three (3) years' related experience as a technologist and/or laboratory technologist preferably in the educational sector. Must have experience undertaking various machining and fabrication tasks primarily using construction and metallic materials and mechanical assembly. Familiarity with the Ontario Health Safety Act (OHSA). Experience setting up of the undergraduate laboratories, and general technical projects related to the operations of the department. Experience in determining material and equipment needs and providing quotes/estimates. Experience operating, lathes, milling machines and portable machining equipment and forklifts would be an asset. Must have experience operating overhead cranes and hydraulic actuators.

**Skills**:
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals is a must for the design and construction of apparatus.
Skilled and/or expert in setting up, repairing, maintaining, operating and operational problem solving of a variety of Civil and Mechanical Engineering equipment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with instructing others in a lab environment.
Experience with monitoring inventory.
Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve and show initiative.
Knowledge of chemical storage and disposal and corrective action needed.
