The role will report any physical or behavioural abnormalities and perform all animal care related tasks in adherence to departmental and regulatory guidelines, policies and procedures. The Animal Care Technician will also administer supplies, procure, set up and maintain equipment, and coordinate cage census activities for the animal care team. The role will demonstrate sincere compassion for animals and will advocate for the welfare of animals under their care by promptly following up with animal care leadership regarding any environmental, experimental or health concerns. **Qualifications**: **Education**: - 2 year community college Veterinary Technician Diploma - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) is preferred **Experience**: - More than 2 years and up to and including 4 years working in an animal care setting, handling and monitoring the health of animals Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Familiarity with animal "normals" for a variety of animal species - Ability to provide timely and consistent animal husbandry that complies with all relevant policies and procedures, and to recognize and report animal health issues - Ability to maintain animal care standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and legislation - Ability to consistently utilize ergonomically sound processes in accordance with guidelines - Ability to foster collaboration and respect among team members - Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience - Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed records and reports - Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation - Ability to assess current process and protocols and make recommendations for improvement - Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities - Ability to follow formal business practices and maintain electronic and physical records and documentation with high attention to detail - Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite - Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments - Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community - Ability to ensure a safe environment by identifying, resolving and reporting safety hazards **Union Statement**: **Background Checks**: Please note, successful applicants may be required to produce current record check(s) (e.g. vulnerable sector, criminal record and police information) from a police service prior to commencing employment. **Western Values Diversity**: Accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities throughout the recruitment process.
