The Kinross Corporate Head Office is located in downtown Toronto and supports Kinross’ operations and projects worldwide. Corporate functions include Finance, Procurement, Health & Safety, Human Resources, IT, Investor Relations, Exploration, Geology and Mine Planning, among others.
You will be responsible for developing and leading all environmental management and compliance plans and work to support our license to operate at the Kinross Great Bear site, including exploration, project(s), and operations.
**Responsibilities**:
- Develop an overall strategy for environmental management and compliance for Great Bear exploration, project, and operations that is aligned with and supports Kinross’ global environmental standards and approach, and meets the permitting requirements and needs of the project. Develop short, mid, and long-term plans related to environmental performance.
- Responsible for the overall implementation of site and corporate environmental policies. Coordinate development and implementation of environmental policy and management plans (reclamation, monitoring, spill coordination, emergency response, etc.)
- Lead all environmental activities on the property, including compliance
- and permitting-related activities.
- Initiate permitting of the Project at all stages, including but not limited to Advanced Exploration, construction, and production, and at all levels of governing ministries or agencies. e
- Deploy strategies and proper resource plans to ensure the timely completion of environmental studies and monitoring/sampling programs during baseline (pre-construction), design, construction, operation, closure, and post-closure of the Project. Select and manage consultants and sub-contractors to successfully and cost-effectively deliver work as required.
- Participate as a member of the site management team. Provide environmental direction and input related to environmental permitting and operation of current infrastructure and development plans.
- Work closely with the Manager, External Affairs on external stakeholder relations that have a link to environmental matters. As needed, represent the site in discussions with regulators, government officials, First Nations and other community members on environmental matters. Participate in related negotiations. Develop and maintain relationships with targeted external stakeholders. Act as the community and First Nations liaison regarding environmental operations at site.
- Negotiate monitoring parameters for environmental studies involving fisheries, cultural resources, flora and fauna, air, surface/ground water as required.
- As needed, build out the environment team to support the site, including hiring, managing and developing team members.
- Oversee the safety of environmental employees, consultants and contractors.
- Oversee the design, construction and monitoring of the tailings management areas.
- Implement appropriate mine closure-related programs at the operations and properties, including detailed closure plans, asset retirement obligations with head office, and consultation related to these plans.
- Oversee the industrial hygiene programs at the site.
- Coordinate fiscal responsibilities for the environmental department including monthly cost review and annual budget development.
- Manage project activities as required (develop scope of work, selection of contractors, AFE preparation, budget involvement, invoices and costs reports, etc).
- Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements of the facilities.
- Adhere to all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
**Education and Experience**:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences or Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Biological Sciences or equivalent experience
- 10+ years’ experience in the environmental management field with a focus on mining-related projects.
- A Master's degree in such fields is preferred.
**Technical Skills and Knowledge**
- Solid foundation in provincial and federal legislation as it pertains to mining projects, including but not limited to agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada etc.
- Solid understanding of environmental issues related to historical mine operations.
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering, monitoring and general dam construction
- Able to comprehend and interpret engineering reports as well as environmental science reports
- General knowledge of all phases of mining and milling operations.
- A good understanding of land management concepts as they relate to mining, forestry, agriculture and recreation.
- Strong project management abilities
