Unbuilders is Canada's leading deconstruction= & salvage company operating in Vancouver and Victoria. The company unbuilds buildings, salvaging almost everything, including irreplaceable Old Growth lumber, windows, doors, cabinets, fixtures and appliances.
Heritage Lumber is a reclaimed wood broker and product manufacturer that acquires lumber from Unbuilders and the wider demolition industry. The company brokers the reclaimed wood through large wholesale buyers, sells it retail from its Vancouver showroom or manufactures building products (flooring, cladding, beams) and furniture. Our vision is a construction industry in which deconstruction & remanufacturing replaces demolition & disposal.
**Job Summary**:
The Human Resource Generalist runs the daily functions of HR within the company
including but not limited to recruitment, hiring and interviewing staff, assisting and backup for payroll processing and assisting group benefits enrolment and support, as well as enforcing company policies and practices. The HR Generalist reports to the General Managers in both Unbuilders and Heritage Lumber.
**Supervisory Responsibilities**:
- Oversee the assignments and periodic and routine workflow of subordinate staff
- May prepare and/or assist with constructive and timely performance reviews and evaluations
**Duties / Responsibilities**:
- Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
- May conduct or acquire background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
- Conducts new hire orientations (onboarding) and implements employee recognition programs.
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, time off approvals in our HR system and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale.
- Work closely with our Payroll administrator to understand our payroll processing systems and procedures; Processing payrolls as a backup and ability to audit the payroll for approvals.
- May collaborate with our Safety Officer regarding occupational health and safety as well as scheduling training and development in a timely manner and communicate with the management team.
- Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
- Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
- Maintains compliance with federal, provincial, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Update relevant HR documents in a timely manner.

**Educations and Experience**:
- Post-secondary degree in Human Resources, or a concentration in Business with a related program from a recognized institution is required.
- A CPHR designation is an asset. At least three years’ experience within the human resource department is required, of which 2 years must be in a Generalist role.
- Experience working in the construction industry is considered an asset.
**Compensation**:
Salary depends on experience and/or combination of education & experience. Company paid benefits after 3 months.
