**Laboratory Technician**

**Location**:Port Hope, ON

**Job Type**:Full Time Permanent, Monday - Friday, Day shift

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Assist veterinarian in the implementation and delivery of the quality assurance program, HACCP program, and Flock Health Program
- Perform laboratory procedures including the preparation, sterilization, handling and inoculation of microbiological media, bacterial culture and identification, preparing bloodwork for further testing.
- Be able to work independently with mínimal supervision and maintain careful, accurate and methodical technique with strict attention to procedure.
- Maintain paper and computerized records associated with laboratory program, QA program, and breeder flock production.
- Policies, Processes & Procedures : Adhere/comply with company policies and procedures. Follow all relevant departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Preparation and sterilization of bacteriological media.
- Performing certain bacteriological culture and isolation tests on a routine basis
- Performing certain chemical tests as required including; disinfectant efficacy, antibiotic sensitivity, pH levels, and biochemistry (reduction of sugars, oxidase ect.)
- Sterilizing and disposing of all culture material and other biological material designated for sterilization.
- Cleaning and sterilizing all glassware.
- Preparing serum samples for transport and serological testing.
- Conducting hatchery inspection as required.
- Assisting veterinarian in gathering samples, preparing post mortems, preparing cultures, submitting specimens.
- Recording and calculating data, filling out referral forms, filing.
- Graphing and tubulating where required.
- Controlling lab inventory, and relevant inventory for BST, QA, and Research and ordering stock as required.
- Cleaning and tidying lab facilities, PM equipment, and field equipment as delegated.
- Checking, inputting and tabulation of flock owner and flock production data (eggs, feed, mortality, weights.)
- Perform fecal flotations for parasitology.
- Update laboratory procedures as needed.
- Maintain drug inventory, dispensing drugs, and record, and medical records upkeep under the supervision of the veterinarian.

**Requirements**:

- Post Secondary Diploma in a related field required. A bachelor’s degree or diploma in microbiology, agriculture, or animal husbandry.
- Some relative experience required; at least 1 year of experience in culturing and identifying bacteria.
- Ability to work / excel in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and effective multi-tasking is essential
- Ability to carry out the physical requirements of the job; including, but not limited to lifting up to 40lb, standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs with equipment.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License class G.

**Work Environment**:
May require some travel to other hatcheries. Risk of working with potential zoonotic pathogens. Working in loud, hot, and/or humid environments. Requires some work in hatchery environment during processing and incubation. Must be able to work with live birds in a barn and laboratory environment.
