**Position Title**
- Applied Research Technician IV (Intern-EIC)**Position Summary**
- The Applied Research Technician IV provides support to Red Deer Polytechnic Applied Research Projects in the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC). This position supports specific research projects by assessing the problem, developing key design criteria, creating research design (both products and processes), doing routine technical/engineering analysis and calculations, troubleshooting equipment, performing experiments and collecting data, synthesis and presentation of data, research support such as gathering information, and reporting. Advanced skill levels involve tasks of greater complexity and require greater independence of action.**Position Responsibilities**

**Research Support**
- Collect research regarding benchmark or state of the art baseline of technology
- Develop key design criteria of problems to be solved
- Develop ideas for solution, with supporting evidence (technical calculations)
- Provide technical support for both internal and commercial projects in the areas of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or similar
- Communicate clearly with the technical project lead and customer to understand the purpose, plans, and outcomes of the project
- Provide input regarding solutions to achieve the customers objective
- Assist with initial costing of assigned projects (i.e. material required, hours on the machine, people hours to complete the project, etc.)
- Assist with determining the timeline of the project
- Clearly communicate the progress of the project
- Perform standard tests or experiments
- Assists in gathering test samples and recording of results
- Compiles bibliographic information
- Modifies standard tests to evaluate effect on product/design
- Observes and records activities following identified protocols
- Coordinates research by advertising for study participants, booking appointments, conducting sessions, recording responses, and performing follow-up as required
- Checks completeness of data of other applied research project associates and makes corrections when necessary
- Meets with assigned clients to understand their research problem

**Data Entry and Analysis**:

- Determines data quality and collection method
- Performs data input
- Conducts focus groups and interviews
- Collects data using complex survey instruments or techniques
- Performs complex qualitative and quantitative analysis
- Summarizes statistical data
- Reports findings in summary form

**Research Synthesis and Dissemination**
- Prepares literature reviews and reports
- Writes draft sections of research papers
- Assists with proposals and grant development
- Prepares graphs and data for slides and presentation
- Presents research results to groups (internal and external clients)
- Searches for relevant research papers from topics provided
- Compiles information from literature searches

**Required Qualifications**
- Three year of undergraduate degree (Currently Enrolled in a University Undergraduate Engineering Degree)
- More than 6 months of related work experience
- Completion of course works in targeted area (completed at least 2 years of undergraduate engineering program)
- Completed statistics course.
- Proficient in Internet research/navigation, Microsoft Office suite
- Computer skills - specific to job (e.g. programming, coding, computer aided design, statistics and/or data management software)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in an industrial lab setting (work around and with equipment)
- Sound decision making ability, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Experienced in working successfully either as a part of a team or individually

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of University in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent
