The **Lab Assistant (Dishwashing Area) is a part-time position (0-5 hours per week)** responsible for ensuring there is clean glassware available for the Biology department’s labs, demonstrations and practical work.

**Responsibilities**:

- Collect, wash and return glassware and other containers required for washing.
- Uses knowledge of the lab locations and type of glassware that is required to collect and return correct supplies to the correct areas.
- Awareness of the glassware types cleaned using the automatic dishwasher.
- Awareness of the intricate glassware cleaned by hand.
- Awareness of the process that all glassware is rinsed with Reverse Osmosis (RO) water.
- Awareness of the process to protect glassware abrasions.
- Clean bench tops and floors in the dishwashing area. Keeps bio-containment area and wash-up items separate.
- Cleans counters and sinks, washed daily.
- Preps buffer solutions and working chemicals
- Other minor duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of a high school diploma (one or more science courses required).
- Completion of first year university (one or more science/Biology courses preferable).
- Currently enrolled at University of Winnipeg (Science undergrad) with current student number and student card.
- Work experience in a lab (science based) would be an asset.
- Training with WHMIS/GHS.
- Must complete and pass U of W Nexus WHMIS/ WHMIS 2015 (GHS) training.
- Must complete U of W Safety lab training, work alone, fire/emergency policy.
- Ability to follow, comprehend carry out oral and written instructions correctly.
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and abide by safety and biosafety standards.
- Consistently communicate with other lab assistant, biology technologists, staff/ faculty, students on status of glassware.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves, lab coat/or apron, safety glasses/protective eye wear) to carry out job tasks.

**An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.**

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Comply with standard work schedule (8-4pm) during standard workweek; Monday to Friday. Hours are variable (0-5 hrs per week).
- This position is occupied by University of Winnipeg students. Therefore, the incumbent must be able to schedule hours around course schedule and coordinate with other lab assistant’s schedule to provide coverage for this area according to workload. The lab assistant will arrange their weekly work hours in advance with the area technician (Microbiology Technician).
