Studio Artist

As a studio artist at Works Design, you are a critical member of the team during the development and delivery of projects. You will interact with multiple teams on materials in creative development and production to ensure the quality of agency work such as corporate reports, presentation decks and brand materials, including documents for print and digital use.

WHAT ARE YOUR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES?
- Developing screen-ready PDFs and print-ready files accurately
- Maintaining file integrity by following Works Design’s standards and processes as well as project-determined specifications
- Ensuring final files meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility standards

DO YOU NEED SPECIAL EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE?
- Formal credentials in graphic design from a recognized college or university, or equivalent
- Minimum three years of experience in a graphic design studio environment, with accountability for file production
- Experience in layout of long-form documents

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
- Knowledge of appropriate software (most current version in use by Works Design), including but not limited to:

- MacOS
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of proofreader annotations and working with commenting tools
- Knowledge of accessibility (WCAG 2.0 Level AA) and remediating files accordingly
- Knowledge of print production and prepress requirements

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU NEED TO DO THIS JOB WELL?
- Ability to work on one document multiple times, sometimes for long hours
- Fastidious attention to detail
- Strong typesetting skills and an appreciation for typography
- Ability to work seamlessly in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
- Demonstrated accountability and a team player attitude
- Speed and accuracy

WHAT WILL BE YOUR CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES?
- Following layouts provided by designer, or specifications provided by manager or client
- Submitting work to be reviewed by design team for design and layout consistency
- Submitting work to be reviewed by proofreader and QA analyst and executing corrections
- Preparation of documents for printing with external vendors (digital and traditional file construction)
- Application of accessibility to on-screen documents as outlined in the Works Design AODA Handbook
- Testing PDFs for accessibility and troubleshooting errors as outlined in the Accessibility Report
- Organizing files by establishing parent pages and paragraph and character style sheets in InDesign
- Formatting Word documents and PowerPoint slides for client deliverables or presentations
- Exercising good judgment in determining priorities; knowing when to bypass roadblocks and keeping deadlines in mind
- Consistently demonstrating the following skills and attributes:

- Aptitude for on-screen work and use of quick-key shortcuts
- Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions as given by account manager/client/art director
- Inputting accurate and current information on digital time sheets with respect to time in and out, docket numbers, tasks, etc.
- Other tasks as assigned by the manager may include server organization and file management

ARE THERE ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS?

Our workload fluctuates throughout the year, and sometimes we are very busy. Studio artists must be available during relevant stages of all jobs. Some overtime and late nights are to be expected. Our current working environment is considered “flexible”; however, this role will require three days a week in the office for training purposes.

We have an engaged and creative team of approximately 40 colleagues dedicated to teamwork and collaboration. We’re project-focused and deadline-driven - so some days may be longer than others. But even when it’s busy, we make time for team activities (whether virtual or in person), rooftop barbecues and other celebratory get-togethers.
