As a member of the Operations team and reporting to the Unit Superintendent, the Shift Team Lead is responsible for “shift operations” leadership for their specific Unit(s) ensuring the safe, environmentally sound, reliable, and cost-effective operations of the Sturgeon Refinery. This role collaborates with the Unit Superintendent and other members of operations, maintenance and technical teams to align and deliver site wide goals. Shift work is required; however periodic/scheduled day assignments may occur.
**Responsibilities**:
- Works in collaboration with the Shift Superintendent to ensure the operations team meets or exceeds the weekly production plan while effectively communicating any integrated risks to the Refinery including unit specific process upsets in the off-hours;
- Ensures shift operations successfully executes Daily Operating Instructions (DOI’s) and shift routines; reports any exceptions;
- Ensures adherence to the Ops Discipline Standards;
- Follows Day In the Life of the Refinery (DILR) process representing their respective Unit & communicates risks/opportunities during the daily refinery production and integration meeting;
- Sets Operator Performance and Development (PAD) goals in alignment with WIGs and Department Goals;
- Confronts performance and behavioral concerns and provides coaching and direct feedback on the performance of shift personnel;
- Ensures quality incident reports are generated for events including reporting and closure with effective and efficient mitigations in place;
- Conducts formal post validation reviews, mentors area operators in their post development and progression plans, and aligns teams to full adherence of Ops Discipline;
- Responsible to ensure operating crew is always staffed with proper complement of post certified personnel, ensuring overtime and pay policies/practices are followed;
- Ensures NWR safe work standards are followed at all times without exception;
- Ensures adherence to procedure usage and redlining process;
- Ensures critical safe work permits and critical task analysis are completed to high standards, reviews for high hazard activities within their respective area;
- Works with the Unit Team to ensure on-shift alarms and impairments are managed proactively;
- Ensures verification, mentoring and support of continuous improvement of operator monitoring, rounds & routines;
- Maintains quality Shift Logs and submits on time;
- Completes environmental reporting in collaboration with Shift Superintendent;
- Acts as Deputy Field Incident Commander for their area during emergencies;
- Chairs safety meetings as required and leads routine reviews of incident reports with shift team members;
- Participates in Emergency Response Team training and ensures on shift emergency drills are conducted as scheduled;
**Requirements**:
- Understands creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and culture;
- A minimum Fourth Class Power Engineer Certification, preference will be given to those with Third Class Power Engineering;
- 5-10 years of Refinery/Upgrader/Large plant experience (supervisory experience considered an asset);
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the applicable unit is preferred;
- Previous training in ICS and NFPA 1081 certified as a Field Incident Commander would be considered an asset;
- Effective verbal and written communication skills;
- Valid Alberta driver's license;
- Strong knowledge and understanding of:
- Site Safe Work Standards
- Process Safety Management
- Emergency Response Procedures
- Refinery/Unit safety systems
- Unit input into production plan
