**Job Overview**
The Fire Chief is responsible for the overall management, leadership, and administration of the Whitefish Lake First Nation #128 Fire Department. This includes emergency response coordination, fire prevention and safety education, training and supervision of firefighters, and ensuring compliance with applicable fire codes, safety standards, and Nation policies.
The Fire Chief also works closely with the Nation’s Emergency Management Department and other First Nation agencies to strengthen community preparedness, safety, and resilience against fire and other emergencies.
The position plays a key leadership role in protecting community members, infrastructure, and lands through effective fire protection, emergency planning, and disaster readiness.
**Duties & Responsibilities**
**Leadership & Administration**
- Provide strategic leadership, planning, and direction for the Fire Department.
- Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols.
- Prepare and manage the annual Fire Department budget, including reporting on expenditures and funding received.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities related to fire protection, capital projects, training programs, and operational support from government or partner agencies.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation for fire incidents, inspections, and training.
- Report regularly to the Band Administrator and Chief & Council on departmental operations and needs.
- Ensure compliance with Whitefish Lake First Nation policies, provincial regulations, and occupational health and safety standards.
**Fire Operations & Emergency Response**
- Direct and oversee all fire suppression, rescue, and emergency response activities.
- May serve as Incident Commander during major fire or emergency events until command is transferred or the situation is resolved.
- Ensure fire vehicles, equipment, and facilities are maintained and operational at all times.
- Conduct post-incident analyses to identify lessons learned and areas for improvement.
**Training & Supervision**
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer and/or full-time firefighters.
- Develop and implement ongoing training programs for fire prevention, suppression, first aid, and emergency preparedness.
- Promote teamwork, discipline, and professionalism among all department members.
- Ensure all staff certifications and training records are current and meet required standards.
**Fire Prevention & Community Safety**
- Lead fire prevention programs, inspections, and public education initiatives within the community.
- Conduct fire risk assessments for community buildings, facilities, and residences.
- Collaborate with departments such as Housing, Public Works, and Health & Safety on community fire safety initiatives.
- Provide fire safety education and awareness campaigns for residents, schools, and community groups.
**Emergency Preparedness & Coordination**
- Work in close partnership with the Whitefish Lake First Nation Emergency Management Department to ensure alignment of fire and emergency response plans.
- Participate in First Nation, regional, and provincial emergency planning initiatives, training exercises, and safety coordination meetings.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and testing of the Nation’s Emergency Management and Disaster Response Plan.
- Coordinate with regional fire departments, emergency services, and mutual aid partners.
- Represent the Nation in external emergency management meetings and joint training exercises.
**Other Duties as Required**
- Attend meetings and share updates as requested.
- Perform other duties may as assigned.
**Skills & Qualifications**
- Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques and the Structure Firefighters Competency & Training Playbook
- Completion of Team Leader and Fire Officer training
- Fire Inspector certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Certified in First Aid and CPR
- Strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Skilled in stress and time management with effective written communication
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive firefighting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity, will be an asset.
- Strong understanding of fire protection systems, emergency management, and safety legislation.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with community members, leadership, and external agencies.
- Valid Class 3 Alberta Driver’s Licence with Air Brake (Q) endorsement and a clean driver’s abstract.
- Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
**Working Conditions**
- May be required to respond to emergencies after hours, on weekends, or during adverse weather conditions.
