The Ophthalmology Department provides optimum in patient ophthalmic care. This includes eye examinations, highly specialized ocular diagnostic tests, minor surgical procedures and laser treatments provide by the Ophthalmic Technician. The Ophthalmic Technician Team Leader would play a key role in providing a safe and efficient patient care environment while coordinating patient flow and administrative support for the department.

The **Operations Leader Ophthalmic Technician** works collaboratively within the team, playing a clinical administrative role within a specialty service, primary responsibility include:
Providing day to day guidance, expertise and experience necessary to support and enhance all aspects of the team's practices roles, quality and effectiveness as it relates to achieving excellent patient care by supporting staff knowledge, skills and growth;
Performing administrative responsibilities in support of the department and the Patient Care Manager (PCM) with the accountability for growth, development and performance of the team and with the day to day functioning of the department;
Performing clinic function and flow responsibilities in support of the provision of excellent patient/family care through multidisciplinary collaboration;
Playing a clinical role within a specialty service and a leadership role that relies on expert service/team knowledge;
Working collaboratively within the team;
Providing and supporting staff education initiatives;
Performing equipment and exam room maintenance activities.

**Activities**:
Provides in-depth technical expertise, support and guidance for the Ophthalmic Technician team, including:
Providing technical coverage, as required;
Troubleshooting phone calls and all clinical and technical issues;
Dealing with patient complaints and issues;
Providing input to improve inefficiencies by providing day to day support and guidance to department clerical staff by: triaging urgent appointments to Physicians; ensuring accuracy and completeness of booking information, etc.;
Performs scheduling activities, including:
Preparing and distributing Ophthalmic Technician schedule, ensuring appropriate coverage in all areas;
Preparing Clerical schedule, ensuring appropriate coverage for vacation and sick time;
Monitoring staffing requirements and schedules for casual staff to fill vacancies;
Assisting with payroll and employee records by maintaining staff schedule and verifying hours worked;
Coordinates meetings with clinic staff to discuss patient flow and staff scheduling to ensure full staffing coverage in all areas of the department and efficiency of workflow;
Performs staff accountabilities, including:
Participating in the recruitment of staff;
Maintaining responsibility for the roll out and procedural training of staff on equipment and procedures, involving orienting staff on the operation of new procedures or new equipment/technology;
Orienting newly hired Ophthalmic Technicians by providing required training and mentoring;
Coaching and provides constructive feedback to staff, as required;
Participating in staff probationary review by providing feedback on staff performance to PCM;
Acting as the liaison between clinic staff and internal/external Physician offices;
Coordinating meetings with Ophthalmologist office staff to discuss patient flow and patient care issues;
Assisting the PCM with staff performance appraisals, staff development, conflict resolution and continuous quality;
Contributes to the quality process, including: liaising with staff Physicians, Residents, Fellows, PCM and other department staff to ensure quality of care and efficiency of service provided to patients; monitoring quality and efficiency of the department, identifying opportunities for improvement, etc.;
Assists with the preparation of diagnostic test requisitions and patient information sheets to ensure accuracy and documentation of required consents;
Develops P&P for Ophthalmology department based on best practice guidelines;
Collects data on OCT/Visual Fields activity and general Ophthalmic diagnostics activity, utilizing data to prepare and generate reports for the PCM and submitting reports, in a timely manner

**Activities**:
Monitors daily clinic activity to avoid overbooking of eye clinic patients;
Liaises with Ophthalmologist¿s offices to ensure appropriate numbers of patients are scheduled for clinic;
Monitors bookings and ensures staff are making efficient use of time;
Reassigns cross trained staff to Eye Clinic areas on an as needed basis to ensure patient wait times are minimized and clinic flow optimized;
Acts as the point of communication for Physician offices to communicate cancelled or rescheduled clinics;
Oversees and delegates the short and long term activities of staff to ensure efficiency and productivity

Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff;
Acts as staff resource for troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment;
