Reinsurance Underwriting Head, Canada

Reinsurance Underwriting Head, Canada Reports to the North American President of Axis Reinsurance. The role is responsible for representing Axis Re in the Canadian market as well as overseeing and growing the Canadian Reinsurance portfolio.

This includes shaping and driving strategy for the assigned P&L, representing Axis more broadly in the market, and developing a balanced and profitable portfolio that meets AXIS underwriting objectives while supporting other units within AXIS Capital that may have Canadian business.

The Reinsurance Underwriting Head will be a hands-on Reinsurance leader with a history of success within a top-tier Commercial Reinsurance Carrier building and managing a Reinsurance book focused on Causality and Professional/Management liability.

Work Profile

Preferred location is the Toronto office working a hybrid schedule of three days in the office. The job requires travel to attend industry and company events, as well as client events.

Key Responsibilities:

- Planning & establishment of annual premium & expense budgets
- Formulation of the strategy for the office, general makeup of the portfolio and business
- Creation of annual marketing plans & regular engagement with key Brokers and Partners
- Represent AXIS in Canada via industry functions, conferences, and media
- Developing new opportunities that fit AXIS requirements
- Represent AXIS Reinsurance in Canada for all lines of business including those not directly underwritten in the Toronto office

Administrative / Management
- Hiring, training and management of staff, including career management
- General office management
- Organization and management of Part 13 business (Canadian treaties not underwritten directly in the Toronto office but which require Canadian licensed paper) as required by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions
- Participate as a member of the Reinsurance Research Council, an industry body representing reinsurers
- Monitor existing business for level of profitability, makeup of portfolio

Communication
- As the AXIS representative in Canada, communicate with external related parties as required
- Collect and report information as required by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions
- Provide updates and reports internally as respects the Canadian portfolio
- Maintain clear lines of communication with staff reporting into the position

Required Education/Training & Experience:

- College degree preferred
- 10-15 years industry experience
- Casualty & Professional (E&O) Lines Underwriting Experience
