General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

**Position Overview**:
Working with truly unique technology in an emerging field, the Manager Cavity Formation will be responsible for leading the Cavity Formation team in the design, development and specification of the cavity formation system used on the Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP).

Acting in a multi-disciplinary capacity, the Manager, Cavity Formation will have extensive experience in various aspects of mechanical engineering, effectively leveraging external design partners and suppliers, as well as bringing a strong aptitude for mechanical design to the team,

This manager will be responsible for leading a talented and passionate team by engaging and inspiring a high level of contribution and quality through effective leadership, performance management, and coordination of all activities in the following areas:
**Key Responsibilities**:

- Provide management oversight and leadership for the Cavity Formation team, ensuring a focus on safety, team development, effective communication, and engagement.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, feedback and performance oversight.
- Be a technical leader in regard to mechanical design for complex engineering challenges which requires out-of-the-box thinking and novel concepts.
- Work with partners and suppliers in the design of key systems and components, often sourcing components that push the limits of fabrication and availability.
- Identify key risk areas and design, build and conduct experiments to de-risk such areas of the Fusion Demonstration Plant design.
- Work with Systems Engineering, other system leads and the Design Engineering team to develop the design for the Fusion Demonstration Plant prototype.
- Manage risks and schedules to ensure the timely delivery of the design.
- Work with the Director to define and support key performance indicators

**Relevant Skills and Experience**:
**Education**:

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (with mechanical specialization). (Advanced Degree desirable)

**Requirements**:

- 15 years’ experience in mechanical design (including at least 5 years’ experience in managing complex design engineering projects).
- Proven leader with a minimum 5 years’ engineering management experience; a technical people leader, adept at managing, mentoring and developing others
- Extensive experience in the designing, building, and commissioning of custom mechanical systems.
- Strong analytical knowledge of engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
- Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to work hands-on with the components of the design, including prototyping, testing, analyzing, and iterating.
- Experience with integrated multi-disciplined designs and systems.
- Genuine passion for mechanical design, solving problems, building projects, and making things work.
- Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments, and for problems where there is little prior art or precedent to draw from.
- Experience managing engineering analysis including FEA.
- Strong understanding of materials and fabrication methods, as well as knowledge of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies.
- Excellent knowledge of 3D CAD modelling and PDM systems, Solidworks and Solidworks PDM preferred.

The work involved in this project requires a strong mechanical aptitude, flexibility, and a passion for solving complex problems.
