The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, a national union representing some 70,000 professionals and scientists throughout Canada, requiresan **Employment Relations Officer **for a 12 month term for its National Capital Region office in Ottawa.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**

Employment Relations Officers are at the core of the services our Institute provides to its members. They are strong advocates for our members in their dealings with employers.

EROs are called upon to advise and represent members in a variety of formal and informal labour relations processes including in grievances and other complaint resolution processes, in mediation, at **arbitration hearings** and before various administrative tribunals.

**Major responsibilities;**
- EROs negotiate agreements and settlements on a full range of labour relations matters.
- They research, analyse and interpret jurisprudence, legislation, regulations, employer policies, benefits provisions and collective agreements.
- EROs collaborate with their colleagues and other specialists and may be required to provide advice to the organization and to develop Institute positions on Institute-wide or group-wide issues, including in support of the collective bargaining process. They participate in the coaching, training and development of Institute Stewards.
- EROs may also participate in and represent the Institute on public service wide labour management committees, national working groups and other national, regional and local committees.

**Knowledge and Experience Requirements**

**Education / Experience**:

- Completion of a university degree in industrial/labour relations, in law, or in a related discipline.
- Requires three (3) to five (5) years of progressive and related experience in labour relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Language requirement**:

- Fluency in both official languages (French and English) is an **asset**

**Skills and experience required**:

- Thorough knowledge of the authorities governing employer/employee relations in the federal public service and other jurisdictions where Institute members are employed
- Strong representational and advocacy skills
- A demonstrated ability and experience in representing members at grievance and adjudication/arbitration hearings and union-management consultation meetings
- Experience handling complaints and grievances, interpreting collective agreements and maintaining effective working relationships
- Ability to counsel members on their employment rights and responsibilities; to conduct interviews, meetings and information sessions; to prepare briefs, arguments, reports and correspondence; and to resolve problems.
- Ability to manage a caseload with a lot of autonomy while still collaborating, sharing expertise and drawing on the expertise of colleagues
- Demonstrated understanding of the union legal framework and commitment to union principles

**Compensation Package**
- Salary Range: $108,929 to $136,161 (G7)
- Group Benefits (Health, Dental)
- Vacation (4 weeks/year) and other generous paid leave
- Paid time off from December 27th to 31st

Preference will be granted in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the IAM local 3011 bargaining unit.
