It's our vision to be the most trusted, innovative utility company in North America by being smart about power in all we do. **JOB DESCRIPTION** **Duties**: BC Hydro’s Generation Stations Civil Engineering (GSCE) Geotechnical Team C, based in Vernon, BC, has openings for three Geological Engineering students interested in participating in major drilling investigations of two very large (> 500M cubic metre), ancient landslides located in the Revelstoke area. The work will consist of roughly one month of office preparatory work located in Vernon, two months of drilling based in Revelstoke and two to three months of drilling based in Mica Creek, with the remainder of the second term in Vernon working on documentation. The successful applicants will gain once-in-a-career experience drilling up to 350 m deep diamond drillholes through slow moving landslides for exploratory purposes and to install inclinometers and nested standpipe piezometers. The students will be an integral part of the engineering team in the field, observing drilling operations, overseeing in-situ testing, documenting drilling activities and logging geomechanical properties of drill core. Between periods of active drilling the students will assist senior geological engineering personnel with geological logging, core photography, field testing (e.g. point load testing) and preparation of drillhole logs. BC Hydro is passionate about the learning opportunity these landslide projects represent, with resources in place to surround developing members with experienced engineering personnel to promote individual development. **Qualifications**: - Be enrolled in the Co-op Program and have yet to graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada. - Have completed a minimum of 2nd year of Geological Engineering. Applicants from Geotechnical Engineering streams with some hard rock geology/rock mechanics training will also be considered. mechanics aspects of geological engineering - Excellent communication skills, proficiency in Excel and ability to work independently. - A Class 5 driver's license is required. **ADDITIONAL INFORMATION** - These positions are based out of the Vernon, BC with field work based around Revelstoke, BC during the summer months. - Accommodation and transportation will be provided during field rotations. - A valid Class 5 Driver's License is required. - As a condition of employment at BC Hydro, a background check clearance will be required. - These positions will be hired as eight month work terms. - Consideration will be given to both undergraduate and graduate applicants provided they are enrolled in the Co-op program. - Drilling will typically be completed in shifts of about 20 days duration followed by time off for 7 to 10 days. Shift durations are shortened or lengthened as required depending on rate of drilling progress. Students will be provided with accommodation at Mica Creek and with work vehicles during drilling shifts. Work vehicles may be used to travel to and from Vernon at the start and end of each break period. Students will be responsible for their own accommodation and personal vehicles during the Vernon work periods and during break periods. Students in previous years have secured Vernon accommodation through short-term rental providers, and typically use drilling break periods to explore the interior and/or return home to recharge.
