**Classification & Regular Hours**: Hours per Week: 35 Salary Grade: Level P **About Western**: **About Us**: Animal Care and Veterinary Services’ (ACVS) vision is: Advancing excellence in research through collaborative and innovative service, education, and animal welfare. **Responsibilities**: As a member of the Operations Team, the Animal Lab Specialist will be responsible for directly supporting the animal-based research community associated with Western and its affiliates by providing veterinary technician services and related support, in conjunction with Institutional Veterinarians. The role will share on-call support as required. The Animal Lab Specialist will perform all animal care and technical related tasks in adherence to relevant guidelines, procedures, and policies. Support includes Sick Animal Response, promptly reporting any health issues and administering treatments and medications under veterinary direction. As with all positions within ACVS, this role requires the individual to consistently demonstrate sincere compassion for research animals, high adaptability, attention to detail, efficient multi-tasking, and effective teamwork and communication skills. **Qualifications**: - Education: - 2-year community college diploma - Registered Veterinary Technician Diploma - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) is preferred - Experience: - More than 4 years and up to and including 6 years working as a veterinary technician in an animal care setting, handling, and monitoring the health of animals; experience with anesthesia protocols and surgical techniques - 2 years of experience working with a variety of laboratory animal species - Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Familiarity with animal "normals" for a variety of animal species - Ability to provide timely and consistent animal husbandry that complies with all relevant policies and procedures, and recognize and report animal health issues - Ability to maintain animal care standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and legislation - Ability to implement treatment and medication according to veterinary direction - Ability to consistently utilize ergonomically sound processes in accordance with guidelines - Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience - Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions - Ability to assess current process and protocols and make recommendations for improvement - Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities - Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments - Ability to ensure a safe environment by identifying, resolving, and reporting safety hazards **Union Statement**: **Background Checks**: Please note, successful applicants may be required to produce a current police information record check from a police service prior to commencing employment. **Western Values Diversity**: **Please Note**: We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
