The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology is the largest basic medical science department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The mission of the Corneil lab is to use a combination of techniques such as extracellular neural recordings and/or stimulation in combination with measurements of behavioral and electromyographic output to better understand how the brain controls movement. Specific foci of research include rapid visual-to-motor transformations, and the development of novel forms of non-invasive brain stimulation. Ultimately, the results of our research will be applied to the study or treatment of diseases that affect human health.

**Responsibilities**:
Working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), the Animal Lab Specialist will support the smooth operations of animal-based research in accordance with all institutional and governmental policies, procedures and regulations associated with animal care and use. The role will perform animal husbandry, cleaning, maintenance, surgery, and oversight and training of non-human primates, while ensuring that all required records and documentation are up to date and available. The Animal Lab Specialist will also provide technical assistance and instruction to undergraduate and post-graduate students on related laboratory procedures and experiment techniques and participate in the development of research protocols.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- 2 year Community College Veterinary Technology Diploma
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Certification
- Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT)

**Experience**:

- 3 years veterinary technician experience in a research/laboratory environment, handling and monitoring the health of animals, in particular, non-human primates
- Experience with anesthesia protocols and surgical techniques

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Proven abilities in providing surgical support in non-human primates or large mammals
- Demonstrated ability with handling non-human primates and a familiarity with animal “normals” for the species
- Demonstrated ability providing timely and consistent animal husbandry that complies with all relevant policies and procedures; and the ability to recognize and report animal health issues
- Demonstrated knowledge to maintain animal care standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and legislation
- Demonstrated ability to implement treatment and medication according to veterinary direction
- Strong organizational skills and demonstrated aptitude as a team player
- Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated ability taking initiative, working independently, and following through on work assignments
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to complete detailed records and reports
- Ability to ensure a safe environment by identifying, resolving and reporting safety hazards
