Numerous approaches have been developed to investigate freeze-thaw processes in soil within the framework of poromechanics. However, this area of study still poses plenty of knowledge gaps. The goal of this specific research project is to develop a theoretical framework and numerical modelling procedures to simulate the performance of buried structures in different types of permafrost (e.g., continuous, discontinuous, sporadic and isolated) by considering the coupling of various processes. In particular, the theoretical framework should be able to address the inherent heterogeneity on different scales with multiple phases of materials and different physical processes. The numerical modelling procedures will be developed to efficiently simulate the coupling of different processes involved in a freezing-thaw process and their influences on soil-structure interaction under seasonal variation of environmental conditions. Funding is available for at least 2 years at an annual salary of $45,000 commensurate with experience, and the normal hours of work are 40 hours per week. Start date is flexible but sooner than later is preferred.
