Job Summary:
Site Operations Manager acts as the business owner and responsible for safety of employees, community relationships, customers and P&L. Other responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, provide leadership and ensure compliance to legislated regulations; develop and maintain a highly productive team of management and hourly employees by constantly driving training, communications, employee involvement, and continuous improvement; direct and integrate all of the operations/manufacturing facility; working with the Region’s Health and Safety Manager, ensuring that all parties adhere to the site health and safety program, and develops habits of safe workmanship and conduct that enhance business performance; working with the Region’s Environmental Manager, ensuring that all parties adhere to the environmental compliance program; working with the Region’s Quality Manager, driving continuous improvement, leading activities and programs, which eliminate variation and errors in processes, and embed Best Practices throughout the operation; working with the Region’s HR Manager, ensuring that all parties adhere to labour contracts, and develops habits of workmanship and conduct that enhance business performance; working with the Region’s Finance Manager, identifying all costs and implements all cost reduction projects which are consistent with budgets and business plans, quality requirements, and available resources; contributing to the formulation of business plans and budgets, and the achievement of the approved goals and objectives.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide leadership to ensure all company safety rules and regulations in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety Act are observed by employees. This includes planning the necessary resources in manpower and budgeting to accomplish site safety goals in the PaSSE and SHARP plans and monitoring the safety program and its effectiveness.
- Monitor environmental compliance and ensure housekeeping standards are met.
- Interface with MOL, MOE and other governing agencies as required
- Maintains neighbour relations.
- Understand and follow the collective agreement
- Implementation of training plans to provide employees with the necessary training to perform their job safely and effectively.
- Drive site performance through effective use of the System for Management, including continuous improvement and non-conformance resolution
- Ensure quality of product during process and adjust production plans to meet customer requirements.
- Monitor and maintain the Industrial plan including prioritization and monitoring of Capital project work.
- Routinely monitor key performance indicators identifying opportunities for improvement and making appropriate supervisory and management personnel aware of the findings.
- Manage overtime requirements to meet sales, production and maintenance requirements.
- Ensure the execution of the daily production plan. Explains significant variances from the plan and provides leadership for improvements within the operations groups.
- Monitor workload to evaluate the staffing levels.
- Monitor costs and implement cost reduction projects which are consistent with budgets and business plans, quality requirements, and available resources.
- Contribute to the formulation of business plans and budgets, and the achievement of approved goals and objectives
Job Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in operations management within a manufacturing, mining, steel, refractory or heavy industry / plant environment; extensive experience in a continuous-flow manufacturing environment where advanced manufacturing practices have widely, continuously, and routinely utilized; experience with preventive and predictive maintenance, ISO/QS quality systems, value-stream mapping and waste elimination, visual metrics and measurements of performance, activity-based costing, safety and environmental management systems;
- Experience with employee involvement in continuous improvement processes, training and coaching of supervisors and hourly employees, negotiations with union committees, and effective communications and interpersonal skills;
- Outstanding judgment and mature business skills, with the ability to establish a strong rapport with senior management.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, strong organization and prioritization skills; detail & process oriented with strong problem resolution abilities;
- Understanding of basic workings of plant equipment - mechanical/electrical exposure;
- Demonstrable success in cultural 'turn around' a plus.
- Fluency in spoken and written English
