Engagement and Inclusion Officer

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
The Engagement and Inclusion Officer (EIO) Program represents Campus Safety Services (CSS) effort to be an active partner in improving campus climate. CSS believes our entire community should be invested in cultivating an inclusive campus and has collaborated with several university departments and student groups to continually improve these efforts. The Engagement and Inclusion Officer (EIO) position aims to support CSS efforts to pro-actively engage and build positive relationships with the Carleton campus community. The EIO will work with partner departments and student groups to increase opportunities for interaction and engagement in non-law enforcement or security related settings. The EIO will strive to achieve these objectives under the direction of the Director of Campus Safety Services, and with supervision from the Community Safety Coordinator
The EIO is a member of the CSS Patrol Services team, and is also designated as a Campus Safety Agent or Campus Safety Practitioner or Campus Safety Guard or Special Constable. Thus, in addition to the specific functions of this position, the incumbent may also be required to provide uniform patrol support functions, when/as directed or as necessary - please also refer to Campus Safety Agent or Campus Safety Practitioner or Campus Safety Guard and Special Constable job descriptions
**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:
- Be self-motivated and capable of working with limited supervision while performing daily tasks and show initiative in identifying and solving problems
- Working knowledge of community engagement, stakeholder relationship building as well as experience in outreach
- Cross-cultural awareness and understanding as well as experience in working with diverse populations
- Knowledge of all forms of oppression and its impacts on those who experience oppression from an intersectional, anti-racist/anti-oppression lens, (i.e. women, Indigenous peoples, racialized people, persons with disabilities and LGBTQ+ communities, and many more)
- Ability to listen and provide non-judgmental support to individuals dealing with challenging situations
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with both internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization and external partners
- Sound judgement, tact, discretion and ability to uphold confidentiality
- Demonstrated excellence in public speaking, strong facilitation, and communication skills - including strong writing skills
- Ability to navigate challenging conversations, willingness to learn, build, and manage positive relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to deal with complex issues, quickly determine appropriate actions, and respond in a composed, self-assured manner while dealing with highly stressful situations and persons in crisis
- Able to interact and transfer information within a team environment as well as instruct when and where required in areas of expertise
- Demonstrated service excellence - experience providing quality customer service and being a strong communicator
- Must have exceptional interpersonal skills and a keen awareness of global and cultural issues, including consciousness and experience in equity, diversity, and inclusion leading practices
**Education and Experience**:
**The above is normally acquired through the completion of**:
- High School Diploma. Completion of Post-Secondary Education or OPC may be preferred.
- Must meet the requirements to be a Special Constable in the Province of Ontario, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ottawa Police Services Board
- Must possess a valid first aid certificate (Standard level) with CPR level C from WSIB recognized provider
- Minimum 4 years’ experience working in law enforcement or security role or demonstrated experience providing support for individuals in a challenging and complex work environment that requires the ability to prioritize work, maintain composure under stress and asses life safety issues with at least one year of experience to promote on Equity and Inclusive Communities initiatives or projects at Carleton University or elsewhere.
- Possess a valid Canadian driver’s licence
- Previous job experience with Federal, Provincial and Municipal statutes, legislation, would be preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
