William Osler Health System (Osler) is seeking to recruit an experienced and creative scientific thought leader to serve as The Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation (ORIHI) inaugural Chief Scientific Officer (CSO). The CSO is a leadership position reporting directly to the Executive Vice President Research, Quality and Chief Nursing Executive, with responsibility for leading the development and implementation of a transformational scientific research agenda focused on patient-centered research.

The CSO will support achieving Osler’s vision of “Developing the health care providers and researchers of tomorrow” and ORIHI’s goal to “Build world-class pillars of research and innovation that will have the greatest impact on health”. To achieve this vision, the CSO will develop the scientific research agenda, specifically the identification and prioritization of major research themes and specific areas of focus, through extensive engagement of key stakeholders including patients, community members, researchers, the Research Council industry, academic and government partners.

As a growing and key contributor to undergraduate and post-graduate education across all disciplines, Osler is strengthening and formalizing academic and research relationships with its academic partners. The CSO will be expected to contribute to developing and growing a rich environment for training learners in priority areas of research and developing collaborations with academic partners.

ORIHI seeks to attract and retain an established research leader to serve as CSO to shape the future of ORIHI and Osler as a leader in health care research and lead the recruitment of a diverse team of outstanding ORIHI scientists to fulfill the Institute’s vision and research agenda.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership and strategic vision for all the scientific aspects of ORIHI while overseeing the work of scientific staff and research programs
- Leads the advancement and implementation of ORIHI’s research and innovation strategy by fostering organizational values that promote innovation, strong interdisciplinary collaboration, research training, and the translation of new knowledge into enhanced clinical care
- Lead the development of world class pillars of research and innovation by generating, identifying and pursuing opportunities in these priority areas, and establishing research leads for each pillar
- Participates in multi-stakeholder Advisory Committees to review ORIHI’s research agenda, its portfolio and the findings of ORIHI-funded research, and to prioritize new research ideas
- Provide regular reports to Executive Leadership in line with the business’s Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and broader metrics on the impact of ORIHI on health and wellness to facilitate analysis and reporting of performance against the research strategic plan and budget
- Contributes to the national dialogues on translational research through presentations and through contributions to the peer-reviewed scientific literature
- Creation of an annual workplan to achieve the goals of the strategic priorities for ORIHI
- Ensures the appropriate recruitment and development of principal investigators, associated researchers, scientific staff and key leaders to meet ORIHI research strategic priorities.
