**Position Overview**
- The Parks Department has an immediate opening for a regular full-time, Trades 1 - Crew Lead, Arboriculture. This position entails skilled and semi-skilled arborist work and includes leading and participating in the work of a crew engaged in pruning, maintenance, planting, removal and falling of boulevard and park trees. An incumbent of this class is responsible for acting as a crew leader in providing direction, and allocating, checking and reviewing the work performed by a small group of subordinates involved in tree care operations such as climbing, pruning, and removing park and boulevard trees. Tree pruning and removal is hazardous work performed with mínimal supervision and requires climbing trees using ropes, rigging, use of climbing harness, and other tools and equipment, or use of an aerial bucket truck as an assist. Assignments are received verbally or in writing from a superior who evaluates the work during progress or upon completion for attainment of desired results and conformance to established work and safety standards.

**The successful applicant will possess**:

- Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, safety precautions, tools and equipment used in pruning, removing, falling, and planting of boulevard and park trees.
- Considerable knowledge of native and non-native tree species identification, profiles and biology.
- Working knowledge of common pests and diseases and methods for their control.
- Some knowledge of District policies related to tree management sufficient to answer general enquiries.
- Some knowledge of power/electrical system components, safety and regulations as related to the work.
- Ability to perform hazardous climbing and pruning, falling and removal tasks at considerable heights.
- Ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to identify hazardous and diseased trees and to take emergency remedial action.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to assign, check, review and participate in the work of subordinates performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks.
- Ability to keep records and enter data related to work performed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and other staff.
- Ability to answer a variety of questions from the public regarding tree management activities.
- Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used in tree pruning and planting work.
- Skill in the use of safety harness and ropes used in climbing trees.
- Ability to perform an aerial rescue.
- Skill in the operation and servicing of equipment used in the work and in the use of tools used in minor servicing and repair tasks.

**Qualifications**
Completion of the 12th school grade supplemented by post-secondary courses related to arboriculture or urban forestry, plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, Occupational First Aid Level 1 and Certification with the International Society of Arboriculture or equivalent are required.

**Compensation**
- The pay rate for this unionized position is $40.38 per hour (2024 rates) based on a 40 hour work week
