We provide shelter, care, and a range of support services for approximately 2500 animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership through education. **What Would You Do?**
This role offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in shelter medicine and develop an understanding of shelter operations for a variety of species, including dogs, cats, reptiles, small mammals, select farm animals, and wildlife. While support our RVTs, you would be exposed to medial care techniques, including species-specific handling and common diseases. To provide more insight, an outline of the key responsibilities of the role have been outlined below.
- Learn about Shelter medicine and operations for domestic animals including dogs, cats, reptiles, small animals, and smaller farm animals.
- Complete online Fear Free Shelter training.
- Learn about wildlife handling and diseases.
- Perform data entry and record keeping tasks for medical records and flow of animals.
- Assisting with treatments, blood collection, vaccinations, and laboratory tests.
- Provide daily care and support to domestic and wild animals within the shelter including cleaning and feeding of specified areas.
- Administer oral, topical, or injectable medications.
- Assist with animal intake examinations and coordinate vet appointments, schedule surgeries and manage disease outbreak as directed by manager, veterinarians or RVTs.
- Ensure all animals have up to date vaccinations based on shelter protocols.
- Communicate and work effectively with other departments specifically, volunteer foster parents and community business partners.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
- Animal Health Technician or Veterinary Technician Diploma, Registered Veterinary Technician Designation is considered an asset
- Experience in a clinical or shelter setting is considered an asset
- Proficiency in recognizing disease symptoms and safe animal handling
- Proven experience thriving in a fast-paced environment
- Exhibit confidence and skill in handling animals of diverse temperaments
- Microsoft Suite proficient
- Preferably possesses a valid G Class license
- Be willing and reliable to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills
- Expert in both written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently and exercise discretion when performing tasks
- Display genuine compassion for animals and people.
The role also involves a degree of physical activity, including lifting animals of various weights, prolonged standing or walking, and the ability to work effectively in noisy environments, as well as adapting to any other situations that may arise.
