**Counsellor**
**Term of Employment: 1-year term beginning as soon as possible**
**Salary Range: $46,964.91 to $63,540.75**
**Location: Henlow Campus, Pembina Campus and/or remotely, as required**
**Monday to Friday, **9:00 am to 5:00 pm (35 hours/week)**
Reporting to the Manager, Student Services, Financial Aid and Awards, the Counsellor is responsible for providing counselling, personal advising and external referrals to Newcomer students attending programming at the MITT English Language Centre to help facilitate their educational, career, emotional, and behavioral needs in addition to encouraging the holistic development of each student.
**Responsibilities include but are not limited to**:
- Provides direct on-campus, as well as virtual, counselling and personal supports for all MITT students with a significant emphasis on personal and academic planning, decision-making; mental health and personal well-being. Being able to adjust the counselling strategy and resources to the individual student is essential (i.e. Adults, minors; domestic, international; Indigenous, mature, etc.).
- Develops and delivers small and large group workshops related to student mental health, stress/anxiety; transition topics (school to work, teen to adult, etc.); parenting, relationship and family issues.
- Responsible for developing, coordinating, and leading student engagement activities for students as required and in collaboration with the MITT Student Life department. Student engagement projects may include topics related to student mental health or more of a general interest to this position as an on-campus initiative or project.
- Maintains a regular schedule of drop-in and appointment-based counselling; may perform student intake assessments and act on a referral from the Social Worker, Student Advisors and other areas of the college.
- Provides information and problem solving support to students which combines the student’s personal, emotional and social needs with the policies, requirements, and expectations of the student’s MITT program.
- Establishes strong support and mentorship roles with students as appropriate.
- Refers students to access external supports for long-term counselling, addictions, medication, etc.
- Works closely with the Social Worker, Student Services Manager and other MITT departments to identify emerging trends within student counselling to MITT’s student population.
- Collaborates with Social Worker and Student Services team on mental health and well-being outreach, programming, development of policies and procedures and crisis response.
- Adheres to relevant legislation, ethics, standards of care, empirically-validated counselling practice, and other research/external resources.
- ** **Documents, organizes and maintains accurate and up-to-date student files to facilitate reporting, student records, program files and other administrative records as required;
- Maintains knowledge and proficiency in all MITT administrative and student records systems.
- Liaises with on and off-campus stakeholders, including speakers, resource professionals, student groups, various departments, instructors and representatives from various governmental and non-governmental organizations and social service agencies;
- Participates in professional development opportunities.
**Required Qualifications and Experience**:
- A combination of related education and experience may be considered._
- Post-secondary degree in clinical psychology, counselling, social work or a related discipline
- 2+ years’ work experience in a clinical or school environment providing counselling, risk assessment or other relevant services to diverse populations of clients is required
- Membership in a relevant professional association, or eligibility to acquire
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English at all levels of the organization
- Ability to make presentations, conduct workshops and network with potential clients and partners
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and courteously with clientele, staff and the public who come from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds (intercultural/cross-cultural competency)
- Strong organizational, reporting and time management skills
- Ability to perform in difficult situations, set and maintain boundaries with clients and manage self-care
- Strong proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office 365 and video conferencing platforms
