Discovery House Family Violence Prevention Society provides a continuum of care and integrated wrap-around services to women and their children fleeing domestic violence. We facilitate transitional housing and offer longer-term, safe places for women and children to call home while they begin to rebuild their lives. Discovery House is about hope and healing using trauma-informed care practices.

**What You’ll Do**:
Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a key member of the leadership team, the Controller provides leadership in all aspects of the Finance department. The Controller prepares and monitors the organization budget to ensure execution of the Strategic Plan. They ensure the finances, accounting, internal/external reporting, and internal controls of the Society are transparent, ethical, and meet the requirements of the Board and Canadian Accounting Standards for Non-Profit Organizations. The Controller is responsible for safeguarding and optimizing the Society’s financial assets and for providing expert financial analysis, reporting, forecasting, and recommendations to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors through the Finance and Audit Committee.
- Leadership and Strategic Planning_
- Actively participate as a member of the leadership team and contribute to a healthy organizational culture
- Provide direct supervision of finance staff, organize workflow, and delegate tasks
- Attend meetings of the Board and Finance & Audit Committee and act as liaison to Senior Leadership
- Establish departmental goals that execute on the Society’s strategy by gathering information; identifying and evaluating trends and options; choosing a course of action; defining objectives; evaluating outcomes
- Liaise with and support financial officers of funder/donor/partner organizations
- Work with all stakeholders to ensure service excellence, fiscal accountability, and strong outcomes
- Financial Strategy and Investments_
- Manage cash, investments, reserves, and assets
- Execute Board-approved investment policy, including monitoring investments and monthly reporting
- Perform cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed
- Identify, analyze, and mitigate potential risks to ensure the organization achieves its mandate
- Evaluate and advise Executive Director and Board of strategic opportunities to optimize assets
- Budgeting and Reporting_
- Prepare/review and maintain all financial schedules
- Prepare and monitor annual revenue and expense budget of approximately 5 million dollars
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, perform budget to actual analysis
- Develop, analyze, and deliver a range of financial reports for Senior Leadership and the Board
- Prepare and manage external reporting including financial statements and funder-mandated reporting
- Review, prepare, and file semi-annual GST and annual T3010 Registered Charity Information Returns
- Prepare other regulatory agency reports, including but not limited to AGLC, WCB, and T4A
- Assist with funding proposals, including budget preparation
- Financial Oversight and Audit_
- Continually monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the Society’s financial proc
