**Position Summary**

The Vice-Principal Academic and Research is a key senior executive member reporting to the Principal and Vice-Chancellor. As the senior academic officer of the University, the Vice-Principal Academic and Research will work closely with the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, acting as their primary advisor on all academic operations. In the absence of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, the Vice-Principal Academic and Research shall exercise all the powers of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor.

Ensuring a continuing focus on the pursuit of excellence, the Vice-Principal Academic and Research will steer the core academic operations of the University and will be responsible for providing academic leadership and direction to ensure program, research and scholarly excellence.

The key focus of the Vice-Principal Academic and Research will be to ensure that Bishop’s sustains an accessible, responsive and innovative learning and teaching environment that prepares students for the world through strong disciplinary programs set within a model based on breadth and depth of learning, collaboration across disciplines, research and creativity, meaningful interaction with faculty and staff, and opportunities to learn by doing.

Among their key opportunities for action, the Vice-Principal Academic and Research will play a leadership role in advancing and implementing the ongoing institutional strategy, particularly with respect to innovation in academic program offerings and the development of research. They will also play a central role in reviewing academic operations and in the long-term planning of resources. This renewal of programs and operations will ultimately contribute to efforts aimed at attracting top-tier students and meeting the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s student populations.
