The Division Head provides academic leadership to both the Human Sciences and Medical Sciences Divisions and serves as their principal administrative officer and official spokesperson. The Division Head is expected to foster collegial relationships with and between division members and with members of other divisions.
The Division Head functions in a number of capacities including representation of the Divisions within NOSM University and externally, administration of faculty and curriculum development and resources for delivery. The Division Head achieves these goals through relationship building and liaison with NOSM U’s Executive Group and the Senior Academic Administrators.
**Responsibilities**:
**Administration of Faculty**
- Provides leadership in the recruitment of faculty, consistent with the vision, mission, and values of NOSM University
- Responsible for the administration of the OPSEU Unit 1 Collective Agreement as it relates to Faculty, in collaboration with Human Resources
- Assigns workload for all Members of the Divisions, in consultation with Members and with the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education, Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies and other Senior Academic Administrators as appropriate
- Leads the recruitment and selection process for Faculty hires within the Divisions, in accordance with Collective Agreement
- Provides guidance and mentorship to the Faculty to ensure they meet their responsibilities related to teaching, research and governance and administrative duties
- Promotes and fosters scholarly activity and research in collaboration with the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies
- Advocates for appropriate support for Faculty from sources both internal and external to the University
- Provides guidance and support to Faculty throughout various processes as outlined in the Collective Agreement (i.e. annual reports, tenure, promotion, etc.)
- Monitors and encourages the professional development of faculty members and assesses plans and identifies supplemental resources needed for faculty professional development
- Receives, reviews and provides feedback to faculty members on learner evaluations of their teaching
- Receives, reviews, and provides feedback on annual reports submitted by faculty members
- Prepares an annual report for the Provost and the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs, to be presented at Senate, on the teaching, research, administrative, and community activities of the Divisions
- Convenes meetings of the Divisions at regular intervals during the academic year and ensures that faculty have the opportunity to participate collegially in decision-making, the formulation of Divisions policies, and administrative tasks
- Fosters collaboration between Divisions members and members of other Divisions.
- Reviews budgetary recommendations and advises the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs on the annual budget for the Divisions
**Curriculum Development, Delivery and Resources**
- Assigns Faculty to deliver the curriculum, including tutoring and remediation of learners
- Oversees and assigns workload related to the development and ongoing enhancement of the curriculum in undergraduate and graduate programs as appropriate
- Collaborates with the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education in the selection of Phase Coordinators and Theme Chairs
- Works closely and collaboratively with Theme Chairs and Phase Coordinators concerning all curricular matters for the UME program
- Participates in the periodic assessment of all programs relevant to the Divisions, including the various phases of the UME curriculum, the UME themes and the curriculum of the Masters of Medical Studies
- Assists in coordinating program evaluation and facilitating change as necessary to maintain University standards
- Advises the President, Vice Presidents, Associate Deans and Faculty about the requirements for accreditation of the UME program that lie within the purview of the Divisions
- Prepares, as requested by the President, Vice Presidents or Associate Deans, materials for accreditation and cyclical program reviews
- Advises the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs on instructional equipment needs
- Acts as a resource for and advises the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, as required
- Arranges academic tutoring sessions for medical learners as required
**Representation of the Divisions**
- In consultation with Divisions faculty members, prepares budgetary recommendations and administers the annual budget for the Divisions
- Advises the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs regarding NOSM University academic funding plan
- Liaises with the President, Vice Presidents, Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs, other Associate Deans, Division Heads, members of the Senior Leadership Group, and other administrators at NOSM on curricular and administrative issues
