May 2023 Environmental Advisor Co-op Student

**Position Summary**:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Field Services, this position is responsible to assist with providing coverage in all facets of the environment team. This includes focus on areas of Governance & Sustainability and Field Services. The 8- or 12-month co-op student provides technical guidance and supports compliance to both operations and capital project management from planning stages through to execution/completion. This position will require supporting the implementation of ATCO’s ISO 14001 compliant EMS. To properly support and advise other functional groups, a key responsibility of this position is to identify and develop key working relationships with business partners.

**Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities**:
Responsibility Area #1 - Technical Support
- _Supporting regional environmental advisors by conducting site visits for projects in construction and reclamation. _
- _Complete environmental inspections and ensure findings are entered into the ATCO incident management program. _
- _Assist with nest sweeps and recommending mitigation. _
- _Assist with developing environmental mitigation measures. _
- _Assist Environmental Advisors with duties on projects _
- _Assist with nest sweeps and mitigations _

Responsibility Area #2 - Reclamation Support
- _Conduct post-construction reclamation assessments and support development of reclamation plans. _
- _Complete reclamation monitoring of right-of-ways and substations. _
- _Develop reclamation assessment reports. _
- _Updating project records and sharepoint sites on a daily basis with reclamation details. _

Responsibility Area #3 - Incident Management
- _Support advisors in responding to environmental incidents in a timely fashion. _
- _Assist in incident review, reporting, and incident investigations, where required, to determine root causes. _
- _Work with third-party contractors and ensure incidents are dealt with accordingly, as per ATCO requirements. _

Responsibility Area #4 - EMS, EPP
- _Work with the Field Services Team on updating, implementing, and auditing the EMS. _
- _Assist environmental advisors with local initiatives. _
- _Support Field Services Team in delivering environmental presentations. _
- _Working with other departments, you will implement and provide guidance to field staff on the EMS. _
- _Educate and support Construction and Operations & Maintenance staff on project-specific environmental requirements outlined in the EPP and Environmental Alignment Sheets. _

Responsibility Area #5 - Data Management Support
- _Assist with data management for sustainability reporting. _
- _Assist with NPRI, GHG, and TEIR annual reporting _
- _Manage the intake of environmental compliance data, verifying accuracy and completeness against compliance commitments _
- _Working with emissions advisors to identify project data management needs and requirements _
- Organize, implement, and review correct data importing, data exporting, and data collection.

**Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities**:

- Currently enrolled in a relevant field of study and a **co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience program**:

- Map and air photo interpretation.
- Plant and invasive species identification.
- Soil sampling and classification knowledge/experience.
- Data management
- Experience with hand-held GPS devices.
- Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent organizational abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- A valid Class 5 Operator’s License issued by the Alberta Government.
- Previous UTV/ATV experience would be considered an asset.
- This position may be based out of regional offices. This role will require travel across the province; field time is expected to be up to 75% of the time and may involve overnight stays. ATCO will provide a vehicle for field work.
