In this role, you’ll primarily service and repair power equipment, such as utility vehicles, generators, tampers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and compact machinery. You will also work on heavy equipment and automotive vehicles as needed, ensuring all equipment is safe, operational, and ready to support various City departments.
You are meticulous, safety-focused, and enthusiastic about staying current with modern tools, techniques, and technologies in equipment maintenance. You’re also excited to contribute to the seamless delivery of essential services that make Victoria a great place to live and work.
**POSITION FUNCTION**
Maintain, repair, inspect and customize equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
**KEY DUTIES**
Schedule and perform repairs and preventative maintenance for a variety of equipment, machinery, utility, and fleet vehicles; identify problems using various diagnostic instruments; remove, clean, inspect, test, repair or replace defective components and engine parts; perform necessary calibrations, adjustments and inspections.
Operate, test, and approve repaired equipment; perform related work using equipment such as welding and cutting tools, hoists and pressure washers; sharpen, balance and install blades on various equipment; service various hand tools and cutting equipment; design, fabricate and modify equipment and vehicles for special operational purposes.
Respond to on-site service and emergency repair calls; review mechanical problems with operators and determine corrective action; provide input on equipment suitability and participate in manufacturer’s orientation; orient operators on equipment, maintenance procedures and operation; recommend changes to operating practices.
Complete computerized and manual records of equipment inspection, repair and service; order and pick up parts, tools and repair equipment from suppliers; maintain literature and parts inventory.
Perform related duties where qualified.
**INDEPENDENCE**
Work is generated by work orders and maintenance schedules or is assigned by supervisor.
Work is reviewed through reports to supervisor and breakdown reports and complaints.
Issues involving deviations from trade procedures, equipment problems, and major expenditures are referred to supervisor.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
**Physical Effort**:
Lift and move heavy materials and equipment. (often)

Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, fertilizers and asbestos dust. (rare)

**KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
Organize and prioritize work.
Working level operation of current City word processing, spreadsheet and related specialty software.
Use hand, power, measuring tools, and diagnostic instruments of the trade.
Read and interpret technical drawings, manuals and related codes.
Maintain accurate records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
Work and operate equipment safely.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification**:
High school graduation.
Current and valid B.C. Certificate of Trades Qualification in either, Automotive, Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanics. (4 years)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
**Experience**:
3 years of related experience.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
**OTHER**:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
